In the case of fire, prevention goes a long way. The fire department's idea to start charging Calgarians for repeat false alarms may look like another tax grab, but it really falls into the prevention category. There were 7,671 false calls in 2002, which is about 20 per cent of the total number of calls the fire department handled. It would be unforgivable if the volume of false alarms prevented fire trucks from getting to a real fire in time. So far, that has never happened, according to fire department's information officer Capt. John Conley. It must stay that way.
