George Von Hardenberg, a 33-year-old-pilot from British Columbia who was to be married in a couple of weeks, died in August when his helicopter crashed. A month earlier, two pilots were killed when their water bomber crashed. Ian MacKay, 41, was from Rossland, B.C.; Eric Ebert, 36, was from Toronto. These pilots died battling the 850 fires that have ravaged B.C. this summer. At least 400 of the 3,500 firefighters there came from other provinces and territories. Like all firefighters, these fallen pilots are national heroes, and they deserve a national monument. Several firefighter organizations are working to get such a monument built in Ottawa. It's a worthy idea. Now, it's time for the groups to start thinking practically about getting it done.
