I'm curious to find out what the advantages and disadvantages are of connecting high vol to a 2 1/2" hydrant port vs. connecting high vol to the steamer port. I have my own ideas on this but I would would like to hear from your experiences. Our Department is currently looking into opertating this way.

Major disadvantage... restriction. While it's only for a short distance it will effect how much water you can get out of that hydrant.
Really no different then putting a 2 1/2 gated wye in line a hi-vol hose lay. Will you still get more volume than straight 2 1/2?... sure, but you would get more volume if you didn't have that restriction.
I'm not sure of any advantages. :dontknow: If a hydrant does have a streamer port you can join the two 2 1/2 together with a siamese to the hi-vol to maximize the hydrant.
Our OG states fully dress the hydrant every time...you never know what your going to need in the end. ;)
