Great to see departments having higher qualifications now. Someone told me though that there's tons of full time guys that live in london that want to work there so that sort of suck. I guess it opens job elsewhere but sort of a waste for the hundreds that will apply.

hey double...not really...don't think that all Fulltimers can pass the dreaded OS! I mean it's FF's that have the hardest time! PLUS, think about the city...they might not only wanna hire full timer's from other dept's. They might want other things that they look for. You never know. The only crap part is they are hiring 8-15, and bet on the former probably.
For those that passed an OS. I only failed the "team" part. I think it was because I answered everything in favour of teamwork. Those that passed, did you answer with any "individuality"? I think that's my ticket...but who knows.

Here is a dumb question. Can you guys tell me what the OS is? I gather that is a written exam but who gives it and where can I take it? Is it just a NFPA type exam to see how you are with the theory?

It's not a stupid question. Each of the tests are different and you have to study differently. Here's what I found by Google...

Is anyone out there going to compete in London? I was intending to but on account of being sick as a dog don't think i'll be able to get my York done on Sunday. Ah well, I think it's confirmed that they are only hiring 8. My "guess" is maybe 4 full timers, 2 preservice, and 2 nfpa...but we'll see.
Good luck to those writing the OS!

How can you guess on something like that? And the new chief doesn't have a preferance on schooling like the old one did with NFPA.
You wont get hired if you dont apply. Im kicking myself for not applying to places like belleville and ajax. Even if its just for the experience of writing the test or getting an interview, every little bit helps. London is a far shot but its still a shot. Think positively or else your never going to get on... see whomever on Sunday..(I'll be the one dying on the treadmill)..

TomC forsure. I applied to Ajax and wasn't successful but how much was the process? $0. So even though I wasn't chosen ?I still came in ahead because its one more cover letter I had to write and one more dept. I got my name into. I applied to Midland because I figured no one would apply and only 9 ended up writing the test. So who cares if I don't get hired if I got an interview that would be amazing experience. Plus I got to write the CPS test which was the same as mississauga so if that test comes up on any more recruitments i'll have written it 3 times.

Tom/Double, yeah I agree with you guys. I guess it all comes down to money to right? I mean, I know the York is good for 6 months, but at $200, plus $50 for the CPS, plus around 600km of driving (gas), sometimes you have to weigh the financial vs. the "probability" of getting hired. It's unfortunate that it comes down to this, as those with money can take more courses, apply more etc.
I still would have applied and just went into the hole but it's just not gonna happen. Plus Vancouver could potentially cost me upward of $1000. BUT, I feel very strong about that process. It is discouraging spending alot of money and getting nothing back from it, but like everyone always says, it WILL be worth it in the end and you won't even think about it. I know they are right.
Good luck guys!
