The guy who rides in the passenger seat, operates the radio, siren, double-checks 911 addresses, etc, allowing the driver to focus on the first priority - Driving and arriving alive.

Boys, what we got here is a classic case of Run Away Thread (RAT). As a result we moved this intriguing cerebral montage to the General Chat area under the heading snow. We believe that this RAT was started by the onset of snow to the west coast.
Do not allow this action to be taken personally.
A common side effect of this action (the moving of a Live RAT) is sever depression known as DRATS or 'Depressive Run Away Thread Syndrome'
If you find your self suffering from DRATS please seek out a professional bartender at once. He will know what to do. In some minor cases a good friend or colleague and a case of beer will do.
So in short watch out for the RAT to avoid DRATS

First thing this morning I hear that it was +18 in Toronto yesterday, now you tell us your golfing! This morning with windchill it's -55 C, and school is cancelled here in SW Manitoba. It was pretty mild here yesterday as well... we set a record, 12.8 degrees. The same day last year was -43 with the wind chill... now, there's a difference!
So, in the last week we have experienced, -25, snow, changing to ice pellets, changing to freezing rain, changing to rain, then a night time thunder shower, to wake up to fog and 9 degrees, to raise to almost 13, dropped today to 1, will be -19 by the end of the weekend... There you have it folks... three seasons in one week... As the saying Down East goes (I'm a Cape Bretoner), if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes!!!

Hey Sue, maybe you should go after that beer girl job. Ah never mind, you likely see enough horses a**es at the stable.:D
Just got back in from a car fire call on the side of the highway. Something wrong with putting out a perfectly good fire on a day when its -33 (-47 w/wiondchill) . One of our guys ended up with a quarter sized freeze on his cheek (upper, not lower). That took all of 5 minutes, and he was wearing his 'clava. Way too cold to be doing this stuff.:(
That's our first call of 2005. Two left til the "3" is done;) .

That's too funny. Last summer we were doing a drafting drill with our pumper (1985 flat nose Superior 800 gallon) our "training officer" decided that since it was in tight quarters he should back the truck up. We told him he should dump the water first, so as not to sink in the soft ground. Our warnings went unheard (or ignored.) He backed the pumper up into muskkeg then said "WE" should have dumped the water. We called for a 950 Cat loader to pull out our truck. Oh yeah anyone care to quess how many mosquito's and black flies are stirred up, in muskkeg, with a fire truck, front end loader, and 15-20 firefighhters at 10 at night. Not many kinfd words were spoken at 1100pm when we got back to the hall. Someone even managed to get pic's of the training officer putting pine branches under the tires. It's funny now though!:D

DFC, I drove home from Bayfield, NB (near the NS border) in a snowstorm, it completely followed me.. it's usually about an 11 or 12 hour drive to Ottawa from there.. but this time it took me 19 hours.. .I was so pissed and revved to get home by the time I hit Montreal I just kept going.. it was like driving through a field while I was between cities.. that's just plain old stressful driving... now, ask me how many pints I drank when I made it home!!! hahaha!

And then I'll ask " are you that big a fan of veh ex. that you would use your e-brake to get betweeb 2 semis? Tell me that was a joke. Please.

oh, no, no, no... I definitely wasn't clear... I'm talking about going maybe 10 KPH and parking between two other parked vehicles (and we're talking small trucks here.. not those big freaking honkers... I'm not Vin Deisel, are you crazy?)... eeeekss.. and I've come to the angle I want to be at before I pull in between those two parks vehicles... eeeks... and I don't do it where there are people or moving vehicles... lol.. I used to do it when I was parking at work (selling cars) and always the last to arrive into the side lot... drove my car pooler crazy! har har... oh goodness no, I do not want anyone forcing their way into my car to save my life!!! I'm a little silly now and then, but I try not to be reckless! ;)
And... I don't remember how many beer I had!!! hahaha....

Gulp... off topic... 6 pages of snow and NOW you decide to go off topic!? hahaha! And since I'm JG's twin, I'll gander a guess at about a 5 hour drive to Bathurst, but I think I'm being generous.. it's 1-1.5 hours to Moncton from St. John and Bathurst is a little more than twice the distance.... Holy crap BCFire... a third blizzard? We've been lucky here this winter and last, for that matter, not too much snow dropped at once, it seems to bypass us and hit JG. I think Mother Nature is still making up for the ICE STORM! Now that hit us pretty hard! Ouch! No power for 2 weeks, no phone for 4... I was living on a dairy farm and they had to milk the 50 head of cattle by hand for 2 days.. poor guys had no sleep. I went Bungee Jumping there... nearly scared the life right out of me... the falling part was crappy, but knowing you have nothing but a figure eight around your ankle with something that looks like a horse's leadshank, put on by someone in training.. well, it just doesn't instill confidence!!! hahaha.. they must have done all right though, I lived to tell... but that damn climb up the ladder (150 feet) was a load of fun! hahaha!

They all look pretty good except Amherst. Amherst is what we have had for the last 30 hrs. Plows are out just now (after 12 hrs off) checking to see if they can clear anything. Confederation Bridge is still closed to anything but cars, which can't get to it anyway. I am thankful that we had no pages because most guys would have to wait for a snowmobile to pick them up. We have a list of local snowmobile drivers that can be called to pick up FFs if the roads are blocked. Both family cars have snow packed under the hood solid, like you shoveled it in, the wind pounds it in and then your car won't start. This is the fourth blizzard like this in January,I am getting weary of it. Big, heavy dumps of snow are yet to come in Feb and March. Don't get me wrong, I would not trade for the slides that Bestcoast is dealing with, just needed to vent abit. Thanks,BCFIRE

Wow Sue, what a coincidence. My dad, bro and sis live in Ottawa. My bro-in-law is a Capt on Ottawa FD. I am close to the Bridge, it's practically in my back yard, I can walk under the first piers at low tide. Our FD covers the bridge and we have a rapid response vehicle for that purpose. It has jaws, bags, rams, medical and a foam snuffer unit.
Our regular plow did not show tonight, they brought out the heavy-duty stuff. A road grader with a special huge vee-shaped drift cutter on the front and a long side wing to push the snow over the ditches. He cleared the road just fine but buried the end of my driveway with a huge furrow. I have tommorrow morning to dig out, I work night-shift. Expecting a minus 30 wind-chill though.
Take care, BCFIRE

Well, it was -2 to +5 for the snow drags Saturday. At least we had some high hazy cloud, so the track didn't turn to complete mush. I gotta tell you this. There was a Yamaha Venom here with a turbo kit on it. 165kmh on a 660 foot strip. 202kmh and still climbing on the 1/4 mile radar run!!!!! Holy snowrash, Batman!
Last couple of days its been around -5 or so. Easy to take. About 35 snowflakes this morning.:D

I dunno for sure ScubaJude, but from the info I see, I would guess at N. Mexico, Arizona, Nevada. CO or MT wouldn't be prime swimsuit and boat drink locations right about now. Too much snow. :D
Blast from the past night tonight, Mrs. Smash and I are going into Brandon to catch Harlequin tonight. A rather underrated band in the late 70s, early 80s. Didn't see a lot of them then, I was doing lights for another band at the time. But they were a great bunch to party with!
Heading down to the hall in about an hour for a quick get together with our truck committee. Rep from Fort Garry coming out this aft. to meet with us and discuss our wish list, general specs etc. It's still hard to realize that we are ordering a new truck. Last new triple combination pumper was in 1985! 20 year old truck. 17,000km, about 1600 hrs. Hoping for CAFS on this unit, but our understanding is that it may be as cost effective to get this unit as a pumper, and get a seperate truck (mini, midi) with the CAFS. Find out this aft. Have a great weekend all. Talk at you later.

Hey DFC, that sounds like a full and fun weekend!!! but, might I ask, is it snowing???? (topic man, topic)!!! hee hee!
I'm officially starting my Boys and Girls Club volunteering today! I am so excited. I'll be working with the 6-10 year olds for now. It's a very structured program, so that's a good start for me! I just love the little kidlets and they enjoy adults who will actually take the time to listen and ask questions.. amazing the feedback you can get from them!!!
And it's cold here today, blwing, but no more snow.. the three feet is finally out of my driveway this morning. Little Wannabe and I had to pliw through it in the Accent yesterday... she laughed her head off, snow blowing up in front of the car... I am definitely not teaching her safe driving.. must learn that I am not a stunt driver!!! hahahaha! (always in the safety of my own driveway of course.. hee hee!)
You and Mrs. Smash have a blast in Brandon!! :)

Do any of you guys do anything useful with this snow? You know, like ski, snowshoe, ride horses or snowmobiles? I know some do ice fish. I'm going to have to get out there and try it out!!!

I do not believe this. Yesturday I was laying in the sun on the deck. (as long as you have a southern exposure on the deck it's quite nice) Now here comes the snow. I just had to say something about it.
Trueth is I love the snow and the blizzards. Just haven't seen much this year. We did have a white Christmas though. So that was great. Chances are we'll have a blizzard in the next few days since I won't be here to see it.
California is complaining big time. I'm from San Francisco bay area. My friends and family have been very ungracious about so much rain. We're so dry I'd even take rain.
You know if it's raining you don't have to wash your car. Something I've noticed as I must drive by one of our 2 firestations to get home alot. I see the young fireman out washing the chief's cars. Is this a standard practice? They are city owned cars so maybe they have to keep up their immage? Be worth becoming a firefighter if I get my car washed every few days.

Yep Jojo, thats what I said about MT and CO. Hopefully going skiing at Breckenridge in April.
I was just going by the time zone. Guess that would only leave NV and UT because would be snow in ID as well. It doesn't matter to me, really. Welcome aboard.

Ok, I look at Yellowstone National Park as my backyard. Fact is Mt is way to warm and dry these days. I'll probably have to go out of state to do much fishing this year so will get as much in as possible before summer. We should be several ft. under snow right now. That I can tan in the middle of winter here is pathetic. Used to when I grew up in Ca. It is actually snowing once again. Though I doubt by Tues. we will have any left.
I like my snow and blizzards as well as 110 for summer. Quess I prefere extremes.
These forums are not only informative but am enjoying trying to keep up with you guys. So lets get going on some good SNOW talk! I haven't heard anything new for at least a post or 3.

We've had drips before, but never directly above the monitor and keyboard.
Oh well, it's off to the roof I go, break up the ice without breaking up the roofing, and shovel it all off. Hey, it's only 2000 square feet of roof. and about 2 feet of snow.

Everytime I say something about snow on here we end up getting some. Woke to 2 inches this morning. However it has all but melted. I just miss my 3ft. minimum we usually have each year. Well maybe if I keep talking we'll get more.

Lets all show up on BC"s door-step. After all, he likes beer. We could start a charter jet in Newfoundland and plead weather refugee status in lotus land. Golfer's would be considered skilled immigrants. Volunteer Firefighters would be considered persecuted in their homeland. H'mm it just might work. LOL

LONDON, ON - Smashed cars and jackknifed trucks were strewn across Highway 401 yesterday, making Canada's busiest highway look like a "battle zone," police said. Snow pelted the region all day. Emergency workers were called to deal with more than 170 vehicles that had skidded into ditches, medians and each other on area highways.
And that was just by noon.
"It looked like a battle zone," said Western Region OPP Sgt. Dave Rektor. "I saw cars and trucks upside down in the centre median, trucks jackknifed into ditches . . . and those are just the ones who didn't manage to get out themselves."

Eeesh, they sure got pelted again didn't they? I don't mind the snow we received... I was actually a little upset when it was all cleared up the next morning, but very happy we didn't get that kind of a mess! Yikes!!!
Today it's the blowing snow here that's causing me issues!!! I got my poor car stuck this morning in the laneway thanks to blowing snow... what a mess... LittleWannabe drive the car while I pushed it finally... hahaha... she was very proud of herself! haha! Oh March - In like a Lion out like a Lamb!!! Please, please, please let that be right!!!!

No way man.... I am still loving it.... but the wind... well that's another story!! hahaha... I wouldn't mind if there was still snow at the end of March, I just want it to be cool, not freaking freezing and no wind, just a nice pleasant snow fall over night and -7 all day long, no dampness... perfect!!!! Ahhhhh.... now that's an end of winter I could deal well with... and then, come April... I'll be wishing it long gone!!! hahaha...
Funny story, the truck that came to plow the driveway ended up sliding off the side of the driveway and broke the wood fence! hee hee... poor fella, good thing the tractor started and he pulled himself out! haha! But it sure was funny to see the plow buried in the snow and the rear tire spinning in the air!!! hee heee... my little blue car is not alone!!!

Kewl. 16 pages, 233 posts on a topic that started out as a RAT. And for the most part, it even stayed on topic. Okay, so there is no topic, but it's fun just the same.
And even that bestcoast guy, with all of his protests of no more snow, or posting about snow, came back 'cause he couldn't stand it.:D
Life is fiiiine.

we drove to Minot, North Dakota the other day, which is about 1.5 hours south of us, and they have absolutely no snow there!! Strange how it can be that different in such a small area.

Did Mrs. Smash get her leak fixed and is the roof in one piece? Are you still in one piece? I've been waiting on tender hooks to be sure nothing feel out of place!

Hey JoJobrat. No problems. Threw up a 24 foot ladder, zipped up there with my trusty plastic shovel (not as hard on roofing)and spent 4 hours shovelling snow and ice. Right in the center of the roof, by the drain, the full 35 feet wide x 6feet (the entire drainage valley) was filled with about 3" of ice. Cleared all the ice out and no more leak. The building was built in about 1910 and some person of higher intellegence  decided that the roof needed slope. So, peaked? nope. Shed? Nope. Valley. Both ends slope down to the center, about 2 feet of drop in 30 feet.
Found out about 15 years ago that the drain hole is EXACTLY the right size to be blocked by a softball if it is thrown onto the roof by kids. And it rolls quite nicely to the lowest point. THAT was scary. 18 inches of water up to the edge, 3 1/2 feet deep at the drain. Why is that roof leaking? :p :D Must be well built, it didn't collapse.

If you go about half way between Brandon and Virden, on the Trans-canada, and then go about 1 hour north. I know because I like to go there and miss the interesting fire calls here in Melita while I am away:confused:

And from the Lion's Journey for Sight. 750 mile 4 day snowmobile ride. No groomed trails. Just ride!

Whoo hoo. A party! We'll see. Strong possibility of back to work next week.
Sorry wilderness, that name's not ringing any bells. 7000 acres huh? We lost a few PMU operations here over the past two years as well with the market changes.
Oh well, off to the driveway to change the brake pads and rotors on the kids car. Working in the slushy spring snow.
Hope it doesn't all go away, our dept.'s poker derby is one week away!:p

Well, aren't you all great. Plugged the drain, set up the brolly, stocked up the bar, and nobody showed up. I'm just not gonna do that again. And I was so loking forward to a party.
Maybe I'll just go to my room and pout:mad:

I'm glad to hear Mrs. Smash doesn't have to wear scuba gear to work.
