While the contract settlement with its 240 firefighters will cost more than $3 million over the life of the deal, the city dodged a $12-million expenditure when the firefighters' association withdrew its proposal for a 42-hour work week during recently completed negotiations. Windsor firefighters are the only major service across the province still working on a 48-hour cycle and cutting the work week would have forced the city to hire an additional 25 firefighters and 11 more officers to maintain mandated coverage levels.
