I know people do many things while one scene to calm them selves. What do you do? Me I sing to my self. Lately the song of choice is "Mr. Mom" by Lone Star.

I actually don't really get overly nervous on fire calls, I am usually busy trying to picture the scene, while on route, by the info that was given to us by 911, and trying to plan what we may possibly need and which compartments the equip. would be in. But If we are on route to a fire call and I am donning an SCBA, I usually get all of my SCBA on, and then put my mask on(not hooked up yet), and then (When time permits), I will generally close my eyes and kind of zone out for a while until we are a minute or two from the scene. It seems to allow me to concentrate better, and do my job with a clear mind. I don't know....it works for me.

I don't really think about my nerves. I'm sizing up and communicating with the other guys. We watch out for each other and ALWAYS communicate.

Well, when the pager goes off my adrenal glands go into overdrive. I jump in my 440 powered 72 Charger and smoke the tires out of the driveway and down the street. While correcting the wildly fishtailing street monster with one hand, I put my green/red/blue/pink genuine Kojack fireball on the roof with the other. After running a couple of slow driving seniors off the road, and narrowly missing a 4 year old on a tricycle, I slide into a parking spot at the hall. Running inside, I assign people to units and jobs. By then I'm usually calm. :)

Oooops, levity. Sorry :(

Quite honestly, I've usually got enough to do at any incident to keep me from getting nervous. After the call is when I usually need to calm down.

Do whatever ya gotta do JG. Just keep your bubble on center and do what you gotta do.

Its some thing I do to relax me. I mean some times its ok. But then there are the time that I am so focused you can hit me with a truck and I dont think that I will notice.

Focus is good. Attentiveness is better. But like I said. Its cool. do what you gotta do to keep your bubble on centre. :)

BTW, if anyone on my dept drove to a call the way I described it, they would be on the retired list. NOW.

Oh my gosh, you guys are fun!! hahha! Now there's something I hadn't considered... when I get nervous, I get excited and lots of energy, so part of that is good... I guess I'm going to have to think about how to control the excitement (sometimes can lead to airheadedness).. but I do know when I have been faced with emergency situation, I didn't feel the nerves until afterwards, so maybe that won't be something I'll have to worry too much about it.... hmmmm... will have to think more on this... or at the very least invest in a crack pipe!!

Well on my way to a call every one and thing is quiet. This is cause I dont want to be a hazard on the way and cause a accident. Going over in my mind what I have to do when I first get there which is to gear up in the truck.

Nope i work in a noise filled enviroment, so the more noise the better i.am...damn if the truck could only have 500 watts of KISS playing FIRE HOUSE... the pager goes off and the adrenalin kicks in by the time i get to the hall to drive, i have found my groove and focus at the task at hand..... somedays i can control it better then others, you get driving and your knee is shaking as you push the throttle down.. its funny, i just step back take a deep breath and proceed from there.......

Son, when you do this job for a live'in , you take the job seriously but you must have a sense of humour because if you do not;

The guys at the hall will eat you alive!!!!!

And

After 10 years of seeing the crap we see daily, you will be on the top of the station with a deer rifle, naked and smeered with peanut butter screaming "I am the lizard queen!!!"

You guys are funny.....

My big destresser is music......but I usualy have a hard time finding the CD with the good tunes on it while I'm doin 100 mph up the 1 block to the hall......

Gosh I hope the new pumper comes with a CD player in it.

They'll have to come out with some new 10-code for responding, but out of radio contact due to background noise :D

As clichéd as it sounds, I find that with the training and experience I've had so far (granted, only 2 years, but still), I don't get nervous on the way to calls anymore - Excited - hell yeah - Adrenal glands could give the pumper a challenge in PSI output, sure, but not nervous anymore :)

I do find that afterwards, I get thinking about how some things *might* have gone wrong, but our crew's pretty damned good, so it's not really an issue:)

 I am very calm during a fire. Last time I burned my kitchen down I calmly called for help and watched it burn. No worries here.
