I have for a very long time considered a career in the forces and there always seems to be one little thing that has held me back. I am passionate about working with youth and am very involved with organizations like Scouts Canada, literacy programs, etc. I was wondering how much time you have to volunteer? I know during the initial months you will be strapped for time, but after that when you get posted to a base... is it possible to get involved in outside organizations like Scouts, and doing academic tutoring, etc?

I ask because I have long juggled the call to be a teacher with that of a paramedic/firefighter (for the most part I feel more called to be a paramedic or firefighter, but working with kids is a part of me) and want to insure I can still pursue my passions outside of work.

Once you're trained, posted to a base and depending on your work schedule, you can volunteer all you want. I think the military is big on having it's members volunteering in the community so I'm sure there would be no troubles. I have co-workers who are referees, work with air cadets etc.

After Basic and Trades Trg you could have lots of time to Volunteer. But if you pick a Combat Arms trade.....hit and miss. There were times I was basically gone for a year at a time. Especially if the Army is on deployments. Of course the Navy can be gone for longs stints as well.

It was good for my marriage.....married 15 years and only home for 4 of it! Always seemed like it was fresh...hahahahahahaha

It will all depend on what trade you pick and where you are posted!
