my 2 cents

They don't issue badges for a reason.....cuz we don't need them (unless you wanna impress the chicks.....or TRY to get out of a ticket). You want a real badge then become a cop.

Well put.....
That's just a little too much....buying your own badge just to have one.
I could be a little more descriptive in my opinion but that would just be nasty.

my 2 cents

....or TRY to get out of a ticket)

I have written tickets where I was prepared to let them off with a warning specifically because they have flashed a badge. One particular deputy fire cheif flashed his badge and told me "Don't make me pull rank on you, haha!" Whatever the hell that means...He was promptly served with his much deserving Part One. If you're looking for a badge for this purpose, the key is discretion. Try not to be the asshole that blatently hangs the tin out expecting a get-out-of-jail-free pass.

But Jim7966 thanks for your help, I knew there was one in Barrie but couldnt find it online.

If getting out of a ticket is the only concern the window decal combined with your photo ID convieniently stowed next to your drivers license also helps....not that I know anything about that.

Would that be whilst wearing my "I fight what you fear" Tshirt and pointing out my license plate and bumper sticker that says my other car is a firetruck?

Nah too subtle.

Seems to me that maybe volunteers are just proud to be firefighters & don't mind showing it. I got no problem with that. IMHO Keep your union stickers to yourself. Not many other unions advertise, & walk aroud Look at me I'm a member of the USW local 235... Big deal.

Thanks for finding that DH, as you can see they can customize them and at only $3.95 I will be able to afford one on my fixed income.
I should be able to get out of lots of tickets with this baby!

Of course I am going to miss the beaver I have enjoyed viewing with my current badge.

I'm just not a fan of unions. Whats the CAW done for the auto workers latley ? Oh yeah, & I feel soo bad for the cupie workers in TO. Suck it up & be glad you have a job in these days.

I would generally agree with that statement....but personal experience from working in bars, different PT jobs and just being an observer of people in general the badge does not stay safely stowed in the wallet at all times especially after several bottles of personality. This includes cops,POC, FT FFs security gaurds, paramedics etc

Who said working class stood for low class?

CAW and GM are to blame equally for their woes.Greed plain and simple, cupie or as they are more commonly known CUPE have legitimate issues about their sick bank and tha is the biggest issue on the table.

i was never a big fan of unions until I joined the IAFF they truly are union that works FOR its members. They have also done plenty of good for all FFs not just career guys and gals.

Cops are ISSUED a BADGE because technically they are never really off duty....so that's why they are issued them and the permission to carry their firearm.

But us firemen are just regular folk when we aren't at work....sure we have some first aid skills and such to help out if the need ever arose outside of work, and some experience with throwing water on the red stuff but I don't think yelling off duty "Freeze...I'm a firefighter (while flashing my badge)....everything is under control" is going to do anyone any good. I just can't see any need for a badge...just reeks of being pretentious. To each their own though.

Few around here would be surprised to discover I was a proud union member, in truth there are few IAFF members who are not proud of their union affiliation.

I can see from your comments you are not a fan of unions, as I have previously mentioned I am a fan.The Toronto unions that are on strike are in a legal position to do so and as DH said have legitimate issues.

The CAW did not create the problems the auto industry faces, executives making millions of dollars a year in bonuses, every year while driving their companies into the ground did so. As did the fact that they continue to manufacture an inferior product and refuse to adapt to their customers needs.

I did not say people who live in your area were low class, just that they are low class sort of union members if they are not proud of their affiliations.

You also can have your FD name or emblem engraved on it for those with a retention problem ( like that will make a difference)

Is a volunteer FF ever off duty? this whole issue is about IDENTIFICATION! and being who you say you are. A badge is meaningless without the proper identification to back it up.

Police are issued a warrant card to prove they are police, the badge just makes the uniform look good. I can buy a police badge on ebay and tell the ladies at the bar all that I want about busting grow ops. As for the firearm......... ahh maybe I'll leave that alone.

no disrespect intended.

I hope you are proud of your involvement with your hall, and I hope you are proud to wear a uniform (on the right occassions). And I really hope "volly hall" isn't a negative term.

I also hope no one would embarass their department by trying to use a badge to get out of a speeding ticket... maybe we should just slow down?

It's my understanding that a peace officers authority does not come from badge but from their warrant card (commonly called an ID card).

Technically, their power as a peace officer comes from their appointment as such by the applicable body. The warrant card is proof of their appointment and is usually presented in concert with a badge. That being said, I was a sworn peace officer for two years and I had neither a badge nor a warrant card.

PS- I traded in my handcuffs for a stethoscope and haven't looked back!

Most Canadian Police Services do not allow their sworn members to carry off duty unless they are on call or there is a valid threat against the members life. While there may be no criminal penalties for carrying off duty in those services that prohibited carrying off duty there are most likely internal policies against that which may lead to suspension and or dismissal.
