What is the running numbers that you carry on the trucks?
Ottawa runs 4 on a pumper, 3 on a ladder, 3 heavy rescue,2 on a tanker(not many career tankers in city)

Volunteers

Do you wait for a certain number of people? or do you run with only a few and the rest go with their personel vehicles?

Well.... We usually try to run with 6 in Rescue, 2 in pumper minimum to structural. 2 or 3 will come in second pumper, and 2 or 3 in Tanker as required. We frown on POV at scene unless unavoidable. Makes it tougher to tell civilians "Official Vehicles only" beyond thid point. We have run to structural with 6 total, but as a rule, we have 8 or more. Rescue has seats and belts for 10. If I had to run with 4, I would, but mutual aid would be dispatched before I left our hall. I'd rather turn 'em around, than have to wait the 15 minutes we don't really have when we arrive 10 miles out of town to a fully involved house. And how you gonna attack that unless you've got at a minimum of 6?

MVA calls 6 minimum crew, 8 max. on initial roll. Others may be called in if required. Leave them on standby at the hall until released. 2 in pumper, the rest in Rescue

We also have a F350 4X4 crewcab brush unit, so it's not tough to get the full crew to any call without POV's being involved.

We do pretty well for turnout 10-12 members for most calls. Long weekends can be skimpy though.

We normally run with the following staffing level, depending on time of day. Like most volunteer departments, daytime and weekend response turnout can be challenging (sometimes depending on type of call - bigger turnout for structure fire vs alarms ringing).

Engine - 6
Aerial - 6
Rescue - 5
Tanker - 2 (if required)

The duty officer always responds in a pickup truck equipped with lights and siren.

Stay safe !!

We have a 1974 Ford 840 pumper, 99 Ford F450 4x4 snuffer, and rescue van. In a perfect world 3 in each fire truck, minimum 2 in rescue. We do not leave the fire hall until minimum 5 show up, If you wait a reasonable (3-5 minutes) amount of time and you don't have 5 or more, mutual aid is called in and then you can leave once the call is placed. Of course common sense is allowed, cat in tree, you would'nt worry to much about the previous. Not that we do cats in trees, but you get the drift. We usually have about 7-10 on the average call. We also do not allow personal vehicles at the scene, usually this would mean someone is there without proper turn out gear and we do not allow that. We have written in our rules and regulations, that if you are at a scene with out turnout gear...you are concidered a civilian. If we require you...at best it would be for traffic or crowd control. We stick to this without hesitation! Even if a senior officer is there without turnout gear, he would be replaced by the next most senior officer.

Be safe,

Brampton ... all first run trucks are staffed with a minimum number of 4, sometimes 5. When there are two trucks at a hall, the 2nd will go down to 3 if neccessary (rescue or aerial).

Our pump hold 5 with 3 Jumpsets. We have run with a few as 3 for car fires or medicals. Tanker has 3 wide bench seat, but has run before with just driver. Rescue hold 6 with 3 jump seats. This truck varies everytime. I've seen 1 - 6.

In Edmonton:

Pumps: 4
Rescues: 4
Aerials: 2
Tankers: 2
Dangerous Goods: 4

Some outlying pumps and/or pumps that are the only rig in the hall are sometimes staffed with 5. If there are enough guys the pump goes down to 4 and the 5th guy and another guy that comes put the tanker in that hall in service.

2 out of 8 Aerials are going to 4 guys soon and the plan is to make them all 4 man as soon as possible

Pumpers respond with 2 guys. Tankers 1. Rescue rolls with 3 if the call is in our fire zone. If not, then it goes with 5 or 6 max.

Here in our station if its a structure fire two role with the tanker and pumper. the tanker can sit three if you like, the pumper only sits two...now the trucks have to have a driver and a co driver...if you don't keep paging till you do... if its a tanker only call, the first two arriving at the station will go, unless paged diffrently.... Now we have three shift and anyone can respond if your on shift or not but what they ask is to give the driving privledge to someone on that shift... if its during the day who ever shows up drive...we try and keep it as fair as we can...

small volly department, so things run a little more 'loosely' than in career depts for us...

if it's a medical call, we wait for a few guys to get in the med truck before going (3 or 4). other than that, first to the hall takes the truck and goes... so either pumper or the equipment/rescue truck often (usually) go with 1 in the cab. if someone shows up as you're pulling out in the truck, though, you obviously hold up for a few seconds and let him in with you. :)

having said that, we also don't have 'crew' cabs or whatever you'll call them - room for 3 (cramped) in the new pump, 2 in the old one, and 2 in the equipment/rescue.

We go with as many as we can.....however that's usualy just a driver and co pilot, sometimes not even that.....

Durring the day we have 3 or 4 guys around town....most other members respond from neighboring towns where they're employeed - we have no choice but to allow POV reponse.

Besides.....with green lights flashin we all know who's a FF and who isn't :P

I think Toronto goes 4 on a pumper and will go down to 3 on aerials. Oakville has 3 on pumpers and 2 on rescues.

I was just wondering how many crew their are per apparatus. In Nanaimo they say they would like to have 4 all the time, most of the time its 3.

Also (for the Fulltime City people) do any of your departments run a FF/Paramedic Combo?? Nanaimo is talking about running a Advanced Life Support Paramedic/FF on their trucks, and its not being well received

We're a volly dept with about 32 members.

Pumper goes with 2
Tanker goes with 1, unless its a mutual aid call for tanker then 2
Rescue goes with 5 to first response and mutual aid mvc calls. Rolls with 3 when its mvc in our zone.
All other units (equipment van, personnel pick up, etc...) go with whoever can get in fast enough.

Thats all in a perfect world too. But I must say we have been pretty fortunate to get those number most of the time.

In our agreement with the city, all front line apparatus are to be staffed with a minimum of 4. A secondary response truck (aerial or squad) can go down to three. Problem with that is if the pumper is out at a medical with 4 FF's and a house fire comes in shortly after, all you have is a driver, Captain and a FF. Trucks coming from other response areas will be at least 5 minutes away ... lots of work for you and your Captain for a while.

Belleville Ont.

full shift is 4 on a pump and 2 or 3 on a ladder depending if it is the tower or the straight stick.
minimum manning is still 4 on a pumper but only one on a ladder.

We do not have paramedic/engines but we have some paramedics on staff. they may or may not be on the pumper.
