Hey guys/gals, i have a general question regarding EMS preceptorship. In the very near future i have to pick my top three preferences for placement. Im quite flexible regarding location, so i thought i would ask for any opinions from those that might have some insight towards the vast EMS services in Ontario. pros and cons?, shifts?, employee attitudes?, call volume?, service reputation? anything is better than nothing. thanks

I couldn't give you too much info specific to Ontario but in general I would say you want to do your preceptorship where you will get maximum volume of calls and that typically means in a busy urban area. Many people argue that there are high acuity calls in rural areas which may be true but overall the number of calls is much less. There is no wasted assessment when you are learning and you need lots of practice assessing the not sick patients to build a good frame of reference for recognizing the sick ones. Ideally I think its best to get a good mix of stations so you get a variety of calls and hit all the different demographics and socioeconomic levels with their own particular variety of calls.

I would reccomend precepting where you want to work.It gives you insight to how that service runs the policies, service area etc all things that may be helpful during an interview.
I would also reccomend if possible going to a larger centre.I preceptd in TO and then worked in both TO and a smaller city, hands down the experience I gained in Toronto was far superior to anything I saw elsewhere.I still maintain we saw worse and a greater variety of trauma in the "city" than we did in the "province".I also found contrary to all the rumours I heard the care was far superior in TO.I have told some of my local medics that i would rather have the worst serial killer in Toronto look after my family than the best medic here.
Northern medic made a great point.its all about learning to tell who is sick and who is not,you have already been taught what to do you just need the hands on with real ppl.
