Two Buffalo firefighters -- one searching for a person reported to be trapped and the other responding to a mayday call -- plunged through the collapsed first floor of a burning building and died early Monday. The deceased have been identified as Lieutenant Charles "Chip" McCarthy and Firefighter Jonathan Croom. Lt. McCarthy, a 22-year veteran of the fire department, is survived by his wife, three children and one grandchild. Firefighter Croom, a 10-year fire veteran, leaves behind a fiancee and 9-month-old child.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and their families.

ON - The flags are flying a half-mast at Niagara Falls and Fort Erie fire stations today in honour of two Buffalo firefighters who died Monday while battling a blaze in the city's east side.

"It's a brotherhood. We do every day what they did (Monday) when they lost their lives, so we understand what they went through," said Phil Ross, assistant chief at the Niagara Falls Fire Department.

The city's fire services lower the flags at its six stations whenever a Canadian firefighter dies in the line of duty.
