The department I am currently with uses Motorola HT1000's. Each portable has a speaker mic, which allows you to secure the radio in your pocket, with just the mic exposed. These radios work extremely well. One bonus with the HT1000 is that you can get a charging system that will charge several radios/batteries at the same time. We have the chargers mounted in the trucks, which are plugged in to shore power. This ensures that our radios, and spare batteries are always charged.
I have also used various Kenwood products. These too, come with speaker mics, which allow you to secure them in your pocket, with only the mic exposed. The Kenwoods worked quite well too. The only thing we found was that a multiple charger was not available. Each radio had to have its own charger. If I were to buy a Kenwood portable, I would look at the TK270 or a model similar to it.
Hope this information is of value. :) LTPVFD

We actually have the motorola setup on our trucks, as well, but the motorola's seem to have a problem with moisture. In our field of work water is an issue. Also we haven't had any luck with the mic setup and have removed all of them from service. The didn't standup well to any abuse and constsntly seemed to be in the way while wearing a B.A. I haven't tried the Kenwoods I'll talk to the chief about finding a demo model.
Thanks
Anyone else have more ideas

Our department has kenwood radios they are small and very powerful and come with a full range of options. They all can be epuipped with mics. And what ever else you need. We even have a helmet epuipped with a bone inductor for our ladder truck. Which works really good for hands free operation.

We switched from Motorola's to kenwoods about 2 years ago. BAD IDEA. We all hate the kenwoods, we get no battery life out of them and the just don't seem to compare to the motorola's. We switched because the Kenwoods were a little less money. Won't do it again!

HT1000's are the best radios out there in the low(er) price range in comparasion to some of the higher end models...
Very durable.
Ever dropped a radio and snapped the clip that holds the battery in place? I have on an old kenwood and uniden.... with the HT1000 the battery clip is in the battery and is designed not to break if dropped.
Great radios, scan and 16 channels also allow for multi agency freqs which assists with EMS, STARS, Tow trucks, etc etc.
The mulit unit RAIPD charger is also a great feature!
I com has a new radio out that is 100 per cent water proof and can be under 1 meter of water up to 30 min. Seen a display with one it was in 15 cm. of water for 10 hrs. they are small and light

We also run with Motorola radios and haven't had any major problems.
