Forty-one firefighters in Gatineau are protesting what they say is age discrimination in their salary scale. Their spokesman said at a news conference yesterday that a clause in contracts signed in the former cities of Aylmer, Gatineau and Hull discriminates against new firefighters by paying them a starting salary more than $10,000 lower than previous agreements. Martin Poitras said a firefighter hired in Hull before Jan. 1, 1998, received a starting salary of $32,248. After that date, the starting salary fell to $24,000, a drop of 26 per cent.
