Not sure if this has come up before.

I checked the Ministry of Transportations website and it seems unclear to me as to when other than on a one way road can a vehicle pull to the left to allow emergency vehicles to pass. I am told by a training officer that on a multi lane highway vehicles can also pull to the left if there is a medion or middle lane that will accomodate the full width of that vehicle.

This seems contrary to what has been pounded into peoples heads.

Anybody???????

When the option exists a veehickle must pull to the right and stop where practical or slow to allow the emergency vehicle safe passage.

You are by HTA required to pull to the right and stop(city/suburban/rural) regardless of traffic flow. The reason being the operator knows what to expect from vehicles he /she are approaching....like that always happens.Im sure one of the members of FH who is in law enforcement can confirm or deny this.

Why am i splainin this to a cat? Unless you are Toonces this is all jibber jabber to you!

PULL OVER....when?

We are on the 401 all the time for our calls.......our trucks do 100km/h at the most on the 401. Most people on the 401 travel at 120km/h or greater, so no one pulls over but they blow by us all the time! Pisses me off because once they get to the scene they can't by and then it is a pain for us to try and get around everyone.

So lately I have been driving down the middle until the first car or truck gets the hint, then they usually fall in behind and do not pass!

We mention it to the OPP Rangers and they just shrug their shoulders!!

What can they do? There is no law against passing an emergency vehicle on a multi-lane highway.

(only 100k?.....what have you got under the hood? Gerbils on a wheel????..:D)

I know in BC on a multi lane highway the rule is pull over to the nearest curb, left or right.

Read section 159 (2) of the Ontario HTA.

Following fire department vehicle

(2) No driver of a vehicle shall follow in any lane of a roadway at a distance of less than 150 metres a fire department vehicle responding to an alarm. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 159 (2)

Refer to the definintion of "roadway" per section 1 (1) of the Ontario HTA, then read section 159 (1) (a) of the Ontario HTA:

“roadway” means the part of the highway that is improved, designed or ordinarily used for vehicular traffic, but does not include the shoulder, and, where a highway includes two or more separate roadways, the term “roadway” refers to any one roadway separately and not to all of the roadways collectively;

Fire department vehicles, etc., approaching
159. (1) The driver of a vehicle, upon the approach of a police department vehicle upon which a bell or siren is sounding or upon which a lamp is producing intermittent flashes of red light or red and blue light, or upon the approach of an ambulance, fire department vehicle or public utility emergency vehicle upon which a bell or siren is sounding or upon which a lamp is producing intermittent flashes of red light, shall immediately bring such vehicle to a standstill,

(a) as near as is practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway and parallel therewith and clear of any intersection; or

(b) when on a roadway having more than two lanes for traffic and designated for the use of one-way traffic, as near as is practicable to the nearest curb or edge of the roadway and parallel therewith and clear of any intersection. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 159 (1); 2007, c. 13, s. 19.

So, if the closest edge of the roadway is to the left it doesn't appear that there is any offence.

LOL. We're in the same boat. Tanker limited to 90km/h. It makes you want to just tour to the call with no lights or anything

Our tanker is new and can do 120.....The rest can do about a buck 10. Like most areas the slow lane is about 120 or greater on the 401!

There is a law that motorists must slow down for stopped emergency vehicles, though.
