What are your opinions on ride alongs?

Did any of you go on one before becoming a firefighter?

How do people get to go on ride alongs in your department?

How long are they with you?

In ontario you get a 1 month or so long work placement if you take the Pre-Service course. I did mine with Toronto Fire and it was the best experience of my life. Not all colleges have relationships with good departments. I've heard of guys doing like 1 day ride alongs but its pretty unheard of these days with all the laws and stuff.

Kid , are you on the waiting list? If so your ride-a-long will come to you soon enough. If you are not, call 780 496 3800 and ask for ride-a-long information for the Edmonton Fire Department.

The only ride a long I went on was when I went through the recruitment process with Burnaby Fire in '92. It was a great experience and gives you a good idea of what the job entails. I'm not sure of the policy of my Department but I have seen people on ride a long's before. We relieved an Engine company at a full arrest a few years back and their ride a long wasn't doing to well in the "holding your lunch down department". Better to find out early if you have a weak stomach for some of the thing's your going to see and do on a regular basis, so you can maybe re-evaluate your career choice if need be..........BC...

Should be a good experience. Soak it all up and ask tons of questions. That's what I did my whole month there and still didn't learn as much as I probaly could of. Enjoy!!

I know that FD's are moving away from ride alongs due to liabilty and such .. normally you have to know one of the guys on the dept and he can set something up for a ride along.
Our dept still has ride alongs set up as well as a good co op program for students.

I have tried pretty hard with Markham.... They usually are "too" busy even though I got permission with a captain to go onto his rotation for a ride along... The reason they don't like them is because several years ago, a crew asked their co-op student to hitch a hydrant... he did it wrong and alot of stuff went down quick.... That's what I have been told... I know a few other FF's and i would like to try with them I think it would be a very good learning Experience...

They asked their co-op student to take a hydrant at a working fire!!! I find that a little hard to believe....ride alongs in Vancouver do not get involved in anyway on run's....BC...

Calgary still allows ride a longs. The person on the ride a long is strictly an observer. You can contact recruiting at (403) 268-8767 and they will point you in the right direction. If that doesn't work for you I can arrange for one with my Captain at my station downtown.

That's apparently what happened... I think they still allow co-op students but they are just doing little things like rolling hose.... and washing the trucks now...

We did not allow ride alongs for the longest time due to a no contracting out clause in our contract, Some of the surrounding paid on call depts wanted their people to do some ride time. It was quashed by the union as opening the door to the removal of that important clause.
Recently though, they have relented and we have highschool co-ops in the firehalls but they are not allowed on the trucks for responses, we do allow ride alongs for Fire service students from the Sir Sanford Fleming pre-service course now. They are just to observe and can not do anything.

In Brampton we have high-school co-ops students all the time. they get to ride the trucks and respond to calls. Its usually up to the Captain to determine the level of participation.
We also allow pretty well anyone else do a one day ride alnog if the want too and sign the waviers. It helps if you know someone but you don't have too.

LF I can understand the no contracting out we have a pretty tightly defined one in our local.

How does this affect co-op students? Is it for insurance reasons with the city? We allow co-op students to run calls with us and as Doug246 said its capt decision what they can do.Never any dangerous or important evolutions but they get to do some stuff. They take part in our daily training and hall duties as well.

College students on the other hand will be assigned to overhaul, manning an exterior line with supervision of course or car/dumpster fire knockdown with their preceptor.Thats not really a threat to anyones job and can only benifit the students with real life experience. They are also not permitted to do any of the initial entry, attack or ventilation.

Well guys I did my ride along last night. 20 mins into it we got a fully involved garage fire other then that i had 3 false alarms 1 MVA and one medical. I picked the wrong night though. They gave me the option of friday or saturday, I picked friday and there was a huge fire on saturday. Oh well I'll get my fair share of fires when I am a firefighter.

In our departement we are not allowed to do some ride for the security and the responsability for the city. But some time went some kid come to visite us, we place the truck at the back of the station and do some stuff whit wather and the areal. After that when they are not to many , we let them go in the truck and ride them inside the station and they are verry happy. But for the student who go's to school for training to be a firefighter they allowed 2 weeks in winther and 2 weeks in mai at the end off there course for probation.

It was awesome. The crew was very nice and answered all of my questions. The captian was very nice and even let me stay late. The crew was also very fun loving and ribbed the rookie all night, especially after he spilled the captians drink all over his food. I loved every second of it.
