Hi there, I have seens some similar posts but nothing that is "current" so I'm hoping for a little update from anyone who has recently been in the same boat....Writing exams in Alberta but being trained in BC.

I have just completed my EMR course at the JIBC and will be taking my ACP exam shortly. I know there are protocols that are slightly different but...

1. Are there any differences big enough to be worried about (i.e AED protocols, entenox use, chest pain etc?

2. During the practicals, do we actually have working things such as SPO2, cots, clamshells etc or is this all "there but invisible". THe reason I ask is that during my practicals, I had O2 tanks, Entenox, full kit bag, gloves and a partner too. The only thing that I really pretended was the fire fighters on scene. Everything else was there and expected to be used.

3. Are there any tips or experiences that anyone could share about their time at the ACP

There is some good info on the ACP site but not as much as I would have liked.

Any help or advicer would be appreciated!

Thanks...

1. Sorry, I have no idea about the protocol differences.
2. When I did mine (last...January?), I believe they had kits there, but said that I could use them if I wanted, but I didn't have to if I didn't want to. (My scenario was crazy easy...a broken ankle haha...). I just "pretended"
3. I've heard horror stories about ACP, but...I didn't find it all that bad. I mean, sure it was stressful, but my examiners were really nice, I got out of there pretty early, got to watch movies while I was sitting around waiting...

That's all I've got. Good luck!

I'd recommend looking into the drugs/treatments an EMR is legally allowed to administer vs. EMT or a Medic. There were alot of people who had no idea that EMR's in AB aren't able to administer Nitro, and must assist with Epi

Also, you'll need to know WHICH act this information is found in, as they usually ask that on the test.

Easiest thing to do is review the scope of practice for EMR on the ACP website. It will give you all the information you need to know.

You will be in a room by yourself, no partner and maybe all the equipment you need and maybe not.
