It was about -2C here inSW Manitoba last night, so I decided to jog to the gym, instead of driving. This is the first time I have jogged outside (not on te treadmill) in years. I find that my body doesn't get tired, but I seem to get winded fairly quick. Is there excersizes or some kind of routine, for developing lung capacity, or stamina??

Thanks in advance,
be safe

hey buddy!! The best breathing exercise is basically just doing it over and over and in time the stamina and endurance will build up. Try not to take it too quickly at first, a nice slow pace will actually build your overall endurance a lot faster then running hard. I find it tough to run outside if I haven't had some experience with it in the recent past. When it's really cold now I will get that sore throat and breathless feeling, I find a scarf over my mouth (a thin one) will help to warm the air!
Because running outside is tougher than a treadmill (more road and wind resistence), you may want to alternate your outdoor and indoor training. When running on the treadmill, use the incline at 2%, this best represents the outdoor "lag" without causing issues for the hips (4% is more accurate, but running on anything over 2 is suicide for the hips and low back).

So, basically, just slow down for now, walk or jog very slowly (I had to jog at a 4 MPH pace when I started because my endurance base was very small... I wasn't allowed to walk, because "you're not a walker, you're a runner!" Damn coach! hahaha!) until you've built that endurance back up! It won't take too long!

You hear this from everyone but it is true. Breathe through the nose and exhale out the mouth. It is sometimes hard to get used to but after a while it comes naturally. I run the seawall quite a bit and you go a little faster and a little farther each time......BC....

Thanks guys (and gals)
I did set a fairly slow pace, and the gym is only 50 feet from my house (no just kidding, but it's not to far) I only was outdoors because the weather was so nice. Normally, I can't stand the thought of exercising out in the cold. summer time, I can't stand the thought of being indoors. Thanks for the advice, I'll keep plunking away at it. I have come to learn that trying to make up for being lazy for 40 years doesn't happen over night, but I am pretty happy with my results so far.

Good to hear.... yup, taking your time and making things happen slowly is the best way... too fast = higher chance of injury and higher chance of tossing in the towel... I've seen that sooo many times!!! I am currently training 5 ladies in my area and the 4 that took their time and knew that the results would take time are doing well, the one that did more than I suggested has already quit... no surprise...

Keep at it!!! Sue :)

D'oh!!! That is awesome... you know what I get to look at, besudes te black sky (because it's still dark out right now)... dirty snow and cars rushing by me... oh joy and still, out I go!!! hahahaha!!! Nice... you know, you aren't running too far from where my sister lives. She's right across the street from a fire department as a matter of fact! Too funny!!!

So, in the spring, I'll get to see diry roads and smell pig pooh that they spread on the fields between one little part of town and the bigger part of town... hahaha... and yet... I run! Crazy! lol
