Hey everyone,
I'm so incredibly new to all of this. I've just registered for my EMR course in Alberta, and I'm already nervous! I currently have no prior knowledge except for my SFA/CPR AED training, and I'm just looking for some words of wisdom to get me through with flying colours. The reason I'm becoming and EMR is to work in the oil/gas industry for now, and hopefully become an EMT in the future. A lot of my friends don't think it's a good idea for me (I'm a smaller woman), but I really want this. If anyone has any kind of heads up for me that would be wonderful! Thank you so much.

Heads up about the course or being a small woman in the oil and gas industry?

As for the EMR program pretty straight forward, two weeks long and it will build off the really basic skills you learn in First Aid. EMR will help turn really basic first aid skills into basic EMS skills. Lots of splinting and trauma type scenarios. They will not go to fast for you and you will probably have alot of fun.

As for the female in Oil and Gas I have no idea about....

Cheers

you can do it, no problem! practice scenarios- medical and trauma. it'll help you a lot in your EMR course and eventually, ACP exams.

My experience in looking for work in this area is that the companies seem to put more emphasis on experience in oil and gas than in first aid skills so someone with years as a first aider but who hasnt worked in oil and gas is lower than a rigger straight out of a first aid course. Just my little rant.

As for the EMR, the courses are usually really good and all the scenarios may seem to be a drag but it is the repetition that drills the skills and procedures into your head. It sets you up with a good base set of skills but it is the hands on that will really help. Alot of first aid courses just teach you to do this when this happens but as an EMR and if you want to be really effective study the causes and how the body responds to different things. Knowing why blood pressure is reacting the way it is for example will help with your treatment.

Best of luck to you. Put the effort into your scenarios and you will do fine.
