Hello all,
I was hoping a BC medic could give me a bit of the skinny out there? I am a Full time PCP in ON and have been on the cars for 4 yrs. My wife may have a job opportunity in the lower mainland in the fall which is why I am seeking some info. I have been reading some posts and am kind of frightened of the wages/hours for new medics with the bcas. Anyway here are some??? What are the chances of getting onto a Rural station? And if you do not get in to one of your preferrd locations do they just send to BF nowhere? Do my years of service count or do I start from scratch in BC? As you may be able to tell I am quite concerned about leaving my cushy FT position for a rooky spot making less that half of what I am making now. If someone could please answer some of my ?'s and maybe add some personal experiences I would really appreciate it.
Thanks

Thank you guys who replied to my questions via pm your advice helps. I would however apprecieate more replies and thoughts on what is going to happen to BCAS in April ie: privatization? Fire depts. taking it over... etc... The prob is I want to practice the job I love in a place I know I will love if I can get more than $2/hr... which I do not understand how this is legal? The pay cut I will take is too much to ignore ie: kids, debt, college for kids, my own private island somewhere etc... Thanks guys.

Srry I also wanted to know what medics do to supplement their lack of income out there? I dont really admire the prospect of bartending again. Do they work for 10 different stations, oil rigs, private flight companies, cpr/first aid courses, sell crack? Thanks again

Here in Northeastern BC, some of the medics fo work for the Oil & Gas Industry and then work on Car durring their time off, some do CPR & First Aid Courses, and some have spouses who make enough so that they can afford to get the $2/hr standby wage.

It is a difficult system to deal with especially if you are going to the Lower Mainland. If you don't mind being away from home, there are some pretty good paying positions in the Oild Patch, but it is VERY DIFFERENT than being on car.

Hope this helps,
