CAMPBELL RIVER, BC - The city is still committed to maintaining four-man fire crews but it remains to be seen how that will be funded.

"I am pleased in the fact that council sees the benefits to the community of a four-man truck," Fire Chief Dean Spry said Friday afternoon as city budget deliberations continued. "There's going to be some definite re-evaluation of the services that the fire department provides, because we do have to re-allocate some of those resources within our budget."

Last year, the city cut the fire department budget over the objections of then Fire Chief Larry Samson, and set the stage for further cuts this year. But fire underwriters told the city it risked lowering its fire standards and violating WorkSafe BC standards which require a four-man fire crew at the scene of a fire before the building can be entered.
