How many of you have written the OFM provincial exam?
We had a option at the end of my pre-service course to write the 2 tests. It doesnt give us a certificate or anything until we are with a department but I just got an email saying that a department will be hiring next week with people who only passed the provincial exam in 2004. I know not all colleges write it but now I am glad I did.

You will recieve a letter from the Fire Marshal's Office if you are successful with the exams. You will not recieve the Ontario Firefighter Certification unless you are part of an Ontario FD. You will recieve papers that qualify you to recieve your NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 1. I have passed the exams and I am waiting for my certification right now. Passing the tests allows you to recieve Pro-Board accreditation from Quincy,MA that is endorsed by our own Fire Marshal's Office in Ontario.

Outside of completing the OFM provincial exam in conjunction with a pre-service fire course, Is there another way of completing the testing without the college course?

I have certification as a career firefighter, you need the 3 component tests passed, two courses approved by the OFM, and training hours.

I'm in the process of applying to Fire Depts.(wherever they are hiring) I have not completed the OFM exam which seems to be a pre-req in most cases. Where did you achieve your certification? What courses did you take?

There are two types of certification one for career, and the other is for volunteers I believe. You can write the component tests any time, call the OFM and they will tell you were the next ones are being written. To get the actual certification though I believe that you need to do all of the on the job sign offs.

Go to the OFM web site and you should find the info there for the subjects in the component tests.

I went through some of this already, read a lot, and had a million questions answered,
and at times I am still confused about some things.
As a Volunteer Firefighter you have the option of obtaining your Firefighter 1 through the OFM (gives you IFSAC or ProBoard accreditation)
You do not have to have a Pre-Service with a college to do the OFM Certification process. I can see how this can be a little confusing.
To understand it a little more you can to the OFM website (under fire service certification program) read up well, read the FAQ, everything, then read it all again, twice or three times.
OFC (Ontario Fire College) you can click on the 2008/09 calendar, (top rt corner in the yellow area) enter for the username = OFC, Password = preclass
On the left side you will find a link to the Firefighter Curriculum. You will see components
1, 2 & 3. There is the learner guide that you follow as the learner. Then there are the Performance tests. Each "performance test" must be signed off by a OFM certified trainer facilitator in your department. Once all the tests in COMPONENT 1 (there are 26 performances in Component, performances 1-5 don't need to be signed off but there will be questions on the exam. There is a schedule of testing dates, locations on the OFM website. In this section you will also see "administration" tab, it will also give you a lot of info such as required text books for study, table of contents of the curriculum.
Once you have been signed off on ALL of COMPONENT 1 and have written the exam with the OFM you move on to COMPONENT 2, sign off on all performances etc, write the exam.
Etc. You may actually do COMPONENT 3 or 2 in any order, but component 1 must be completed and exam written first.
So far you have Components 1, 2 & 3 all to be signed off by your trainer facilitator,
Just when you things look easy, you also have to complete and be signed off by "A Company Officer" the "Job Experience Requirement Performance Checklist". It can be purchased by your fire Chief from the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, be sure it is the most recent version. January, 2004. The checklist on the OFM website is the Addendum only. You need the full version from your chief.
You also must have the OFM pumper operator course. (Mandatory)
as well as one additional course. Under "firefighter certification" on the OFM Website you will see the "Application" and it will give you a list of some of the option courses.
I find that the OFM seems to encourage the HAZMAT course offered at the OFC.
The more you understand about the process the less discouraging it will seem. Personally
I find it hard to believe get experience and your certification (with the bonus of ProBoard
and ISFAC accreditation) and they pay you for it! Kudos to the OFM!!
I am not 100% sure but I believe the "Job Experience Requirement Performance Checklist" is put together by the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs. So Kudos to them too!
FYI, the “5000 hours” are for Career Firefigters only, for career firefighter certification only.

Hello
I am a Pre-Service Student and was wondering if any one had any information on the OFM Test and what it is like and what you need to pass the test
Thanks

Component 1 is basic fireground operations (PPE,Hoses & Appliances,SCBA etc.) There are a few questions on Aerial and Tanker operations but not many, fairly basic. Component 2 is special rescue ( Trench, Confined Space, Ice water rescue etc) and component 3 consists of fire prevention, public ed, specialty extinguishing systems, alarm systems etc.
As stated on many other threads all of the info can be found on the OFM website and going the OFC link and the username is OFC and password is preclass.
This information is relevant to the OFM certification and I don`t know what the 2 test are for pre-service students. I imagine very similar. The test are multiple choice with some true and false questions. You must get a minimum of 70% to pass.
For anyone looking into taking a pre-service course I recommend joining a volunteer department and getting all of your training, education and real life experience from them. Once you have completed the required training and have been approved from your Chief you can go write the Components for the FF Curicculum free of charge. Saves you 15-20 thousand and gain amazing experience. Also you can get your Ontario Firefighter Certification once completed all of the sign offs. You can not get your certification from a pre-service course.
Hope this helps with any questions.

Have any volunteers completed the whole process and recieved their OFM and Pro Board certification? A number of us at my department have done our Component One testing and would like to finish the other two components, but it looks like it is going to be a very long and drawn out process before we get there. I'm thinking of doing Component Two and Three through the Pre-Service program.

i think I may have the PDF of component 2 & 3... Do you have the capabality of receiving an email of 100 mo ? PM me if you want it!
I just finised the Pre Service Program and Wrote the OFM TESTS A & B. Im now on a Volly Dept and they plan on us to write our OFM Components 1,2,3. I called the OFM and the OFM Tests A & B are the Same as Components 1,2,3, and technically I was told we are not allowed to write the 1,2,3 components if we have the Pre-Service A & B.
I was then explained that I can go for A Ontario Firefighter Certificate, after I complete this I can go for a Achievement Firefighter of Ontario Certificate. I was confused at this point.
All I can say if you have any Questions, Contact the OFM(email is the best bet) Doug Goodings is the man you want to talk to.... the whole process is confusing and its better to have it written down.
