Hello all, I just got the link to this site off my brother…It’s great! I haven’t had time to read through all the info yet, but the site looks awesome.

Anyway, I’ve applied for the pre-service program at a few collages (Humber, Lambton, Georgian, Durham, and Fleming). Humber has sent me a letter asking me to a 5hr testing session (It's in 2 weeks!!!). I went to their site and read a little about it; found out what books to buy. I was just wondering if you guys (and girls) had any tips (or even a blank copy of the test…j/k:) )

Any help would be appreciated.

Lambton should be your # 1 choice if accepted. I go to Fleming for Fire Engineering. So dis to the faculty here, but their program (pre service) is only 2 years old and the bugs need toi be worked out. My program is brand new. I'm the guenia pig, and we arnt being offered as much as I would like.

Humber has probaly got the best name throughout the departments around the Toronto area. Lambton is probaly a better school but you have to find your own placement and alot of departments are looking to stop college placements. Humber's got tons of partnerships and ive talked to tons of guys and they always say for the most part the students they get from Humber are the best ones. Mind you im a little biased because I went there but theyve been doing Pre-Service and Pre-Entry from the get go.

Well they only let in 36ppl (I think Lambton is 50-60), so it really depends on what school lets me in. I live in Burlington so Humber is closer, but having said that I’ll go to whatever school will take me. I'm kinda pissed that your marks (high school) really mean diddly b/c I have a really high avg.. Oh well I guess I’ll have to back my grades up on the test...man I hate tests.

By the way, do you guys think it's a good idea to do the 3 years at Lambton, or a year of pre-service then 2 for paramedics?

One more question. I have my cpr/basic rescuer/ heart saver and my defibrillator first aid certifications, are there any other things I should/can add to my resume b4 starting the pre-service program?

Any kind of fire related courses, volunteer work or maybe like first responder. Pretty much anything you would do to get on a department. Personally i'd say the paramedic/fire thing would be your best bet.

Im going to be doing a two year paramedic course at Georgian this September. I'd like to work as a paramedic for about one year or two, then apply to firefighting. It doesn't hurt having a back up career, since firefighting is competitive.

Just make sure you don't let them know you want to be a firefighter. They need paramedics so the last thing they want to do is let you into a college so you'll jump ship when youre hired.
