Capt. Jocelyn Roberts passes away at 35
RICHMOND, BC - Local firefighters were in mourning this week at the sudden and unexpected passing of Richmond Fire-Rescue Capt. Jocelyn Roberts on Wednesday. A Richmond High graduate, Roberts, 35, leaves behind her 11-year-old son Briar. Richmond Fire Chief Jim Hancock wouldn't say how Roberts died out of respect for her grieving family, but said it was not work-related. News of Roberts' death hit her coworkers hard this week. Tom Beaupre, who worked alongside Roberts for much of the past 15 years since she was hired, described Roberts as the best female Richmond firefighter. As a woman, Roberts felt she needed to do more to prove herself in the male-dominated profession, he said. "She worked hard to prove she was competent and that earned her the respect of her peers," Beaupre said. Fire Chief Hancock said Roberts will be greatly missed, not just for her professionalism but also for her distinctive laugh which brought a smile to everyone's face whenever it echoed in the hallway.
