I've seen a few sites that have something like this - a map that lets you put a pin on your location (with optional participation).

Personaly I think its kinda neat to see where people are from, and the graphical representation of what a truely national place this is.....

So. What about it? :D

We have been tossing this idea around for a while now and we like it. Please bear in mind that the priority of this enhancement to the site is not high so it could take some time before this idea makes the leap to reality.

keep the ideas coming.

I took a quick look at it but we're not too big on using "free" third party hosted solutions. These things usually have a cost, usually at the expense of the users. We have no way to ensure that your information is remaining private or if you, or our site, is some how being tracked and monitored; your privacy is pretty important to us. It also contains content that we can not control (ie. advertising pop-ups). I'm sure you've noticed we've tried hard to keep advertising to a minimum 'round here, and pop-up ads are something that really irritate me. I don't really want to introduce a feature that is going to bombard you with pop-ups for "Virtual Poker" and the likes. Not to mention that I am a pretentious geek. Like I said earlier, I do think I have a solution, it's just not super high on the list right now.

Thanks. We have always looked for other mediums other than advertising to fund Firehall.com. We take pride in our site and nothing clutters up the look and feel of a site more than intrusive ads and popups.

You might want to post a request for suggestions on maps with user input in the usenet newsgroup alt.www.webmaster

You'd probably have your answer in less than 24 hours. (The regulars in there have helped me meet many a deadline when I run across something I'm not familiar with (and given I'm a Perl/MySQL geek, when faced with JavaScript/Flash crud, that can happen quickly :) ))

What about trouble makers like me, is there a cap on those?

I thought that a member's map would work out pretty good but I can understand the amount of programing that would need to go into it not to mention all the things to take into consideration, such as map detail, change of address (because you know someone will move!), etc, etc. Also, not every town or village is going to be on a map, especially a HUGE map of Canada (it was a pretty big country last time I checked!) so I am sure that someone will complain that their marker is in the wrong spot, etc.

I can tell why it isn't high on the priority list because of the logistics involved!!! Or perhaps Fire_code has some other plans up his sleeve............... QUICK, get the code-ster another can of JOLT!!

Ass Kissing = On

That sounds great fire_code, you all do such a GREAT job running this place for all us smart asses and trouble makers!

Don't think it doesn't go un-noticed. I know I have been spreading the word to everyone I know to give this place a look (and I will be making some purchases from the firehall.com store soon)!

With all the great things found on this website and the ability to share ideas and experiences with firefighters all over Canada (yeah, the US an overseas too) I sometimes wonder if the site can get any better short of us getting a tax break for being members (can you set something like that up???).

I don't know who said it, but "knowledge is power" and having a place like firehall.com for us to share with a group the knowledge we have each learned individually is a great achievement. Yeah, we might be smartasses and trouble makers, but we do exchange ideas and experiences and in doing so this website has helped make countless fire departments and communities across Canada (and the US and overseas) a better, more effective, place.

Keep up the great work!

Ass Kissing = Off

Naw, it's all true! Fire_code and the rest of you administration type guys (and gals if you have any on staff) do a great job an I like this site better than the "other one" I used to visit. Everyone seems to get along here!

Well I had a few spare moments yesterday, so I thought I'd get this out of the way...

Because our service is free to our members we were able to use the API provided by the good people at Google (http://maps.google.com). This not only allows us to provide you with a detailed map with great navigation and zoom controls, but satellite imagery to go along with it. As we state on the page, please keep in mind that this can be accessed by anyone, you probably don't want to zoom in and put a marker right on top of your house. You may do so if you wish, but it's probably not a good idea. If you do not zoom into street level when adding marker the text "approx. location" will display in your marker information. For example, if you zoom into the Greater Vancouver area, you will see that I have placed a marker on top of the Firehall Office because we don't mind people dropping in to have a chat. However if you zoom into my personal marker you will notice that it is in an East Van park and states that it is an "approx. location", this prevents ScubaJude from washing up on my doorstep at 3:00AM, instead he will passout in the park a safe distance from me:D. Let me know what you guys think...

Unfortuately, this is really javascript heavy and some older browsers (and the Opera browser) do not handle it very well. We will be looking at setting up an alternative method of viewing, which will be quite limited. If you wouldn't mind private messaging me the browser and version you are running (usually found under Help > About in the browser's menu).

I don't mind adding anyone to the map, so if you would like to be included just PM me the city/town and a short message to include on your marker.

What makes you think DH has to commute, he is the Chief Ice Auger Technician/Water Supply Guy up there, they couldn't do without him. Can't you tell by some of his responses, sometimes the machine catches on a rough spot and spins him round and round, hence some of his strange ramblings.
