School Bus Extrication Traininng?

Just wondering how many departments practice on the big yellow bus?

We've never before, however we rely on a county truck for all the heavy hydraulic extrication. We just handbomb it untill they get O/S.

What triggered the question is we just had a 5 car pile up the other morning that involved a school bus with 25 kids onboard..... Luckily nothing major happened to the bus (or any one esle by the grace of god ?)

Are there any training programs out there specific to school buses?

We were lucky enough to get one of the school districts old buses. We've used it quite a few times already for mock MVI's. Haven't taken the JAWS to it yet, but we're planning a big mock-up involving all emergency services, using public actors to make it as realistic as possible.

Should be fun!

I would encourage you to ask your local school districts regarding their aging fleets. Sometimes they get so little for the buses when they're done with them, that they are quite willing to help out the community by donating it. Plus they can get a tax deduction out of the deal.

We've had an opportunity several times to completely rip apart a bus with my volunteer dept. Both on it's wheels and on it's side. Hydraulics, air and hand tools were used. As with any large vehicle , lots of cribbing is required.
As for my career dept., we watched some training videos. Not bad,but we also did it in June. Just in time for the summer holidays.

Our dept in 2003 hosted a bus extrication and a train the trainer in auto ex. We brought in Ron Moore for the weekend to train us and it was a great learning experience.. The Course was open to all dept. in Ontario.

We did a school bus extrication course in Annapolis Royal NS done by Bill Murphy whos with the Training Division of Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency Services....I got pics if anyone wants to see the destruction we caused....Just PM me..

emergency service college in brandon offered a school bus-x course last year at their fall courses.
