Fully trained Tech Rescue team stationed at 6 and 7 hall's in the downtown core. I would say the training is very in-depth and it should be if one of your job's is hanging off building's!!....BC....

Are all the members cross trained in all area's - or can they just train in the fields they want?

our team is stationed out of #3 around the university area. We use to be downtown but found that the station was to busy to get any training done. If it was downtown now, with our newer Chief, the training would not be a problem. We are rope, confined, trench, shoring, swift water etc..... Lot's of training, lots of refresher courses and even a yearly exam.

since were talking about trt teams i thought i would talk about the pic of the week and maybe a winnipeg guy could clarify on the sop's for technical rope training. nfpa training requires a safety factor of 2 for every element of the rig and rope set up. from with i can see in the pic theres only 1 line, i know its a single load but do you really know where that rope has been.

I am new to this rope thing, and was thinking the same thing. But I think if you look close enough, you will see, one rope that is a figure 8 on a bend with a safety beenered to the front of his harness, and if you look underneath him, you will see his main line trailing downwards. I think it must just be an illusion that there is only one rope, they must be overlapping in the upper part of the picture. I may be wrong though!

Ill help you guys out...Since im hangin there :) Im on a lowering system and im tethered to my partner with a dynamic tether. The lowering system is belayed at the top with double prusix through the haul system, that is only in case the rack mans looses control. We are not required to have a belay (even in a rescue)if we dont feel we need one..totally up to us in the comfort level. Just for clarification, we do know where the rope has been...I wouldnt go over a 40 story building if I didnt..We maintain logs and all our equipment is kept in sealed compartments on the rescue and logged whenever opened so that we can track everything. Hope that clarifies some for you..

Hey 1680. We used to use the dynamic tether until we perfomed some drop tests on it in a rescue situation. Not very promissing. The manequins went for a wild ride and in a couple cases, they went all the way to the ground. NFPA does indicate that the belay system should be able to catch the falling load without injuring the rescuers or patient. In the tests we did, the dynamic tether belay falls far short from this. What most people don't realize is that the peak force generated in a swing fall is the same as if you fell the same distance vertically. Why expose rescuers to that kind of hazard when there are safer techniques that are just as simple to employ?

Yep we have seen that too...Like I said we dont have to have it. We would use a PMP split tether in most cases. Your right you get pulled right over and wouldnt be able to hold the load...:( That would suck!!!!

This Tether system just doesn't seem like the best system you could use with the technology available and the other techniques being taught out there, why would you even use this system?
I can see a use for it in Rapid Patient access where you send two Medics over to assess the patient (if trauma is suspected due to the circumstances) but other then that I don't see the point in using it for Rescue.
If someone can explain it that would be appreciated, am I missing something here?

Kingston has Tech level High Angle, Confined Space, Trench, ice/water.
We have 6 guys trained at that level per crew. Others are trained at operational level. We can have a max of two off at all time. This sucks because it affects holiday picks. As an acting captain and technical rescue team member, before I can pick a block of holidays, I have to ensure there are not two Tech rescue guys and/or two officers off. So, holiday picks are affected, mandatory 16 hours of training a month over all the regular firefighter duties and training, and....you guessed it.....no extra pay.
From what I hear, the no extra pay is nothing unique though.

That's the same out here Rescue78. I'm a Haz Tech and nothing extra for us and same goes for our Dopes on Ropes and Fire Boat operators. Haven't heard of an FD that does pay extra for specialties. Anyone know of one?
