Hey Everyone...
Just wanted to hear some thoughts from others on this subject.
Our fire department (Markham) has recently decided to install so called "security" cameras
in one of our halls and to be in others shortly. The is over 11 cameras in the building that are mostly aimed at foyers and I believe at least five in the apparatus bay. We have never had any issues at all with security and all doors are already always locked automatically. We only ever have the full time staff in the building and occasional guided tours. At this point there are no cameras that we know of in kitchen/living area, yet I am a little concerned of this. I personally feel that it is an invasion of our privacy seeing as we live here part-time. The security company was told to "fast track"...hurry hurry through this job conveniently after a grievance was filed over the issue. I personaly dont like being on camera...kind of like always being watched. It is always in the back of my mind. I am also concerned the cameras will be used for more reasons than just security. These cameras can also be viewed from other locations, i am guessing over a secured network. The contractor mentioned that it was a 30,000 dollar job...I would have thought maybe this money could have been used on need equipment or much needed firefighter training. Anyways...just wanted to hear some feed back from others...thanks in advance

I feel the same way you do about the issue. It's a public building, but not a building that is open to the public. There should be no need for cameras, except maybe at the entrances. If there is no history of security issues, then there should be no need for security cameras. Next step is microphones.

Who ordered them installed? The chief/administration? Or was it the city security department?

Your association/IAFF Local better get on this FAST. It's BS.

Every guy/gal in that firehall should file a grievance .. that should send a strong message to administration that the cameras arent wanted.

Than again, duct tape over the lenses never hurts either. ... :)

Now before everybody freaks out let's make it clear I'm not a big fan of cameras. But they're everywhere, in all kinds of workplaces, police stations, hospitals, etc. As long as they aren't in the washrooms, or the sleeping areas I don't think a grievance would stand up. They are security cameras, regardless of whether or not there have been previous "security" incidents they are there to protect 1) the employer 2) the employee. They are not neccessarily there to watch for an "external threat" they could very well be put there to make sure the firefighters aren't doing anything they shouldn't be. That's still a form of security monitoring, just not a very warm and fuzzy kind for those working there. I've worked in places where (with exception of the washrooms/change rooms) every movement is recorded. What it comes down to is this. It's their building, and as harsh as this is if you don't like it you don't have to work there. I understand that's not a palatible option but it's there. Cameras are everywhere and you are going to see their use grow not diminish. Wait til they want to mount one inside every apparatus. And don't think that hasn't or isn't being considered. The police association fought the cameras and lost. Don't shoot the messenger. get used to your employer not trusting you. The further away from the floor they are the farther they have to fall.

It has to be posted that the building/area is being monitored by video recorder.I would also get in writing from the chief the city and the city solicitor that unless the act being commited is murder, sexual assault or other serious crime they cannot be used for disciplinary purpose. Some of the newer trucks come with cameras attached and they run with audio 24/7. that all being said if it shouldnt be filmed you shouldnt be doing it at work.

I don't see it as any different to dispatch recording all radio trans missions or no doors on lockers. If you are ashamed or feel the need to hide it, it shouldn't be in the firehall.

My two cents

I would agree with getting something in writing that these cameras aren't being used to question every action you do. I.e. We noticed you standing around talking by the truck for too long. That would be a real firefighter/overhead staff relationship killer!
