Please do not banish me as I am not a firefighter. I am an APT Investigator. I am new to your forum and am concidering going into arson investigating. This forum is alot different from the national one I monitor, but I am sure enjoying it.

I basically would like to ask questions. (I have a real hang up about getting the right answers.) One question I posted on the other site is as follows: I was reading that a firefighter shouild never stand in the exhaust of an engine or equipment as it can taint an arson investigation. Can anyone explain or expand on this. I think I know, but would like to hear what others have to say.

Hey JoJobrat! Welcome! And no worries, I'm not a fire fighter either, just working as hard as I can to become one!! This is a great place for information, not to mention a nice little retreat from a long day! :)

I'm not sure about the tainting part, but it ain't very good for the lungs to stand in exhaust fumes either. That's my bigger concern.

As for why, maybe something to do with fumes getting into your gear and when it's tested at a lab, they'll confuse it maybe with traces of an accellerant in the fire????

I am so lost as how to find this site. It's taken me 25 mins. to find this again. I even tried my "favorites" button and it still didn't get me to where I wanted to be. However I rarely give up until I am successful. So I am finally getting back to the site.

Thankyou for the warm welcome as well as the answer to my question. Anyone else have an idea? It was the Fire Marshal at the University of Kentuky who wrote the artical, he just didn't explain what he meant.

I will be on site for a few more days then will be on my way for a week or so. I appriciate any chat.

The only thing i know for sure is, all trucks are to be vented on the passenger side of the fire apparatus... this is UL rating i was told from a fire truck manufacture...... it has to do with health and saftey...... now i will beable to check with one of our investigators tomorrow when i see him...

The only thing I can come up with is VOC's. Perhaps the theory is that you may do a swap and have it get contaminated from your person. I think it's a stretch but possible I guess...

Edit: What 's an APT investigator?

From what i've been told, it the same reason you don't fuel you gas tanks on scene..it can contaminate the scene.. say you have the fumes in your cloths and the investigator is using a monitor it can send it false readings depending on how long you were standing in the fumes...also if he was using a dog the dog might be reading you instead of the scene, causing a false reading again...... also if you were using a chainsaw on scene you could drip gas on yourself and the samething would apply... you get the idea

;) Thanks for the welcomes and answers. I do have a local fire chief that I ask far to many questions. Though he never minds. He's just not always available.

Wilderness you came up with the same basic answers that I did only I didn't get it confirmed. Thankyou for doing that for me.

Toxic: I put it wrong, it's an AFT investigator. I do "after the fact" investigating. Mostly child custody cases. I go out and check for relitives to see that nothing bad is going on in the house. Like the mom leaving the 6yr old to watch the 2yr old while she goes to the local bar. Or that the latest live-in isn't fresh out of prison.
It can be fun if you like to dance and drink a bit. Gives me a good excuse to go dancing as often as I like. That's not the only place I encounter people, just most of them. I do alot of house watching in the wee hours of the morning. The only scarey times are when I have to park near one of the local firefighters or policemens houses. I'd rather not have them knowing I'm out front. The work in my area is limited due to being a smaller group of towns.

This morning however I played cowgirl and moved 48 head of horses.

Hey wannabe: keep working on that goal. I gave mine up after making it due to no suport at home. My husband thought it was "cute" that I wanted to be a cop. The ****really hit the fan after I made it. I now regret giving up a job I loved. Never spent a day regretting getting rid of him though.
