Hi there,

Just wondering if many depts. keep a basic medical history, i.e., base line pulse, and BP, medications, existing health issues, allergies etc... of their membership. Mainly for emergency purposes in the event of something happening on a call. we could then pass that information on to the paramedics.

If you do, where do you keep that information and who has access to it.

My dept is considering implementing it.. ( probably long over due...)

We'd limit access to it... either in a lock box on our rescue van, problem there is who gets the key, chief, deputy chief, accountability officer, medical officer??.... that could become problematic as being a volunteer dept.. there's no guarantee as to who'll be responding and how do you ensure it's kept confidential.…, the other alternative to it, would be keep it sealed into one of the tags we use for identification and accountability. The tag would be marked with something to ID it as the appropriate medical info tag.. And when on a scene that tag is kept with the accountability officer.. in the event something happened, that tag is cut, and info passed on to the paramedics.. Anyone got any other ideas?

We carry a laminated card in the inside pocket of our turnout coat. Contains base line vitals for blood pressure and pulse. Also contains your health care number, information on allergies or medications, and name & phone number of next of kin.

Card goes with you if you need to be transported to a medical facility.

Stay safe !!

We are soon to implment a tag system. This way if you go in and some thing happens. Then all you have to do is go to the truck and get the tag. It will have all vital info on it. Like name DOD, Blood and all that nice stuff. Even a picture to see how to reconstruct your face.

Uh jg, tell me you meant DOB. I would hate to think someone was preordaining my DOD. I know that the date is known, I just don't want someone on earth knowing it before I do.:D

2 things in place:

ID cards laminated and carried by member inside gear. That covers off Base Live Vitals (BP, Pulse) for Re-hab referance. Also has the name, rank, photo and issue date on front. The back is Base Lines, Health Care #, Dr. name and phone, emergency contact, allergies, medications and any vital information (IE High BP etc..)

Also carry a sealed envelope on the Rescue and Pumper with sheets containing all the above.

We have only had to use it twice, but nice to have handy. 1 was a fall and the other was a cardiac.

Theres a system for sale thru MSA....its a tiny container that attaches to the inside of your helmet which contains your medical Hx....it also comes with a sticker that goes on the outside as a heads up to look for it....I'm in a battle right now to try to get these inexpensive, yet in my mind important devices

When I was at college (OFC), a firefighter from the area of Thunder Bay(Shunia) told us about their system, I thought it was great. They used a laminated card, using 2 separate cards, all the firefighters personal info was placed on the back of the two ID cards. The two cards were then laminated together as a set with all the info between, if there was an emergency they would just snip the laminated edges and the info could be obtained. I thought this was a great idea since Gov medical numbers, private info were not available for everyone to see unless required. If I remember correctly this card was part of their accountability system.
