AURORA, ON - I am the project leader of an environmental research team, and this year we are collecting data on changes in ice formation on inland lakes over the winter. Cold-weather conditions are a hazard we are prepared for. However, I would like to know what additional safety precautions are advisable when working on ice over water.

Past research, including accident reporting, has resulted in some helpful guidelines for working on ice, which are equally applicable to scientists, utility workers, rescue workers and people using the ice for recreational purposes.
