Hello,
I am looking for some info in becoming a paramedic in Ontario. I live in Hamilton and I am a foreign nurse with 7 years experience in the OR and ambulance service (volunteer).
I graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, but unfortunately I have failed the CRNE (Canadian Registered Nurse Examination) last year in October.
I will like to know the process and some contacts. I already called the Ministry of Health, left a voice message, no calls yet.
Is there an equivalency process? Who to contact? Is there somebody who went through this process?
Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

If you can pass the R.N exam... than I think you can challenge the A-EMCA exam... If you don't pass your RN re-write I think you will have to go about it in a way like any other person... 2yrs collage... and go from there...

Look into the occupation deeply, the difference in Nursing and EMS is night and day...

Good luck,

I dunno if you can still go the challenge route,i think medic school is mandatory now same no more grandfathering since the introduction of SR and defib etc.

Straight from MOH's EHSB website:

I am a Registered Nurse and wish to pursue a career as a paramedic. What do I need to qualify?

You would be required to attain certification as an Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant (AEMCA). Certification follows the successful completion of an Ontario paramedic program or by completing the Paramedic Equivalency process.

Registered Nurses in Ontario with at least 450 hours of land ambulance pre-hospital patient care experience are considered equivalent for the equivalency process. Registered Nurses with extensive experience in critical care areas (emergency, ICU) may receive up to 330 hours of credit towards the 450 hours of land ambulance pre-hospital experience. For more information please visit the Paramedic Equivalency section or contact the equivalency liaison.
