Yup ... just saw a CBC report that a FedEx truck in Winnipeg was involved in an MVC with a car and it was transporting ANTHRAX to a lab. They went on to say that it is typical that couriers transport all kinds of hazardous materials. Luckily enough, the anthrax containers were not damaged and no one was exposed. Winnipeg FD had the area taped off and their HAZMAT team went in to make sure everything was okay.

Something to keep in mind.

Yeah we are lucky enough to have the virology lab in winnipeg. Inside the walls of that lab you can also find all the level 4 nasties - stuff like ebola. There are also a few level 3 labs in Winnipeg including one at the UofM.

I have always had a beef with Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations regarding biological agents. Now a lot of stuff is also being sent as "diagnostic specimens" instead of being indetified in what I would call a "proper" fashion. Oh and there is no placarding requirement for biological materials either. Potentially the truck could have been loaded with biological agents instead of just a few boxes (like yesterday) and still have no placards...

At least the instances of researchers coming back from Africa with Aids samples in their carry on baggage seems to be quelled...

Ahhhh. it's like Pontiacs. They tell ya in all the ads "Built for Drivers", but they'll sell 'em to anyone.:D

So as not to hijack the thread. Toxic, I hear ya. There's a lot of stuff moving out there without proper ID. We approach pretty much every commercial vehicle incident as Hazmat, until proven otherwise.

It was of course downplayed by the lab, but hey who knows what's spin and whats truth?

Kudos to the driver of the van and WFPD who did it right by the sound of it.

Not sure I would want all this stuff moving via a single dedicated Carrier though. It would make for a very easily identifiable target if people were so inclined.

Just need stiffer enforcement of the existing rule.

The rolled over truckload of cocaine we attended had no placards on it at all! What a surprise! :D

WINNIPEG, MB – A Federal Express courier truck carrying a package of anthrax collided with a car in central Winnipeg on Wednesday, but officials say the package was not damaged in the crash.

The truck was carrying five packages to the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health, the federal virology lab downtown. The packages contained samples of anthrax, E. coli, salmonella, tuberculosis, influenza and a sexually transmitted disease.

While none of the substances spilled, questions are being raised about how dangerous goods are shipped to the lab and about safety precautions taken for people who live in the area.

So true, you never know what these guys are hauling. Vancouver is a port city and container's are coming and going day and night up and down Knight street. Any MVA involving a rig with a cargo is potentially dangerous as Smash said and should be treated accordingly....:D ....BC....

You said it, you never know what they are carrying and sadly enough sometimes they don't even know what they are carrying. We had a shipment of Huish laundry detergent coming to Costco about a year or so ago (the detergent is in a large plastic tub) that turned out to be other than laundry detergent. The driver was instructed, while on route, to make an unscheduled stop at a storage facility instead of going to the depot. He was a little confused by this and mentioned it to Customs when he arrived, as his paperwork said he was travelling to a depot. His load was searched, the shrink wrap was taken off and low and behold, it's not laundry detergent, it's a 50 foot trailer full of coke!! Eeeeks! The driver was not charged, apparently he knew nothing about it. We never did find out how it all happened, we just know this vendor is still flagged for all Canadian shipments... lol! Imagine! Yikes!!!

i will never look at a fedex truck the same way again, thats just retarded, the fact that if a terrorist group found out what the fedex truck was carring. THE OUTCOME OF THIS STORY COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE. thank god it wasn't...
