Just looking for a bit of info from someone who is working in Nova Scotia.... on the service, unions, pay, scheduals, best places for a young family in NS etc... I am a FT Flight Paramedic as well a Pt land guy here in Ontario and my Fam and I have an opportunity to move to NS. So I was hoping someone could enlighten me.

Thanks in advance,

I'm really not sure if there are any current career fire fighters from NS active on this website

All I can tell you is that I work with four different medics all of which moved from NS to Ontario to work... I might cross paths with a couple of them over the next few days, I'll ask what their thoughts are of the east.

Hi 1Hoser,

Well I'm not too sure as to where the best spot for your family and stuff would be, but I do know that depending as if you are a PCP or ACP there would be lots of opportunities to work in nova scotia. Pay would probably be considerably less in NS although cost of living depending on you're area could be a lot less as well. visit emci.ca for info on the company which is owned by medavie ems (they own NB, NS, PEI, and Muskoka services) As for pay I know a Casual PCP over there makes something around 21/hr and change, and I think for ACP your top level pay is somewhere around 28/hr. There is little to no chance at getting on full time off the bat as a PCP but since they're goal is to have an ACP on every truck in the province, there is better chance of getting on full time. Scheduals are pretty much the same as anywhere, 4 on 4 off for most bases but some spots I believe still have a 24 on 36 off schedual. I know most of the ER's in NS also hire ACP medics to work in the hospital, usualy triaging patients and being part of the code team and stuff. For Flight you would probably have to get on they're in house CCP program and to my knowledge they only hire for those positions based on seniority basis. (althought don't quote me on that) Hope I was able to be of some help! I you have any more questions let me know and I'll try to get them answered for you.

Joel

In Nova Scotia a PCP starts out as casual employee with a starting wage of 20.59/hr

Naturally, amount of shifts will be dependent on where you want to work in Nova Scotia.
