I like them, the graphics always rubbed off of the old ones.

Yes Scoop, thats EXACTLY why they changed the cards. I gurantee 90% of all the issued union cards have had the graphic or lettering rubbed off. I like the new cards its about time they fixed this problem, and with all the union dues they get off of me its about time i got a fancy card

You would think being a union member for 10 years i wouldn't have to ask this question, but. What are the union cards good for? I have not recieved my new one yet and in fact I don't even know where my current one is. I found one from a few years ago in a drawer but again what do I need it for. My local is small enough that we all know each other.

Im pretty sure that is the main purpose.I know if you want to buy the Harley firefighters edition thats the ID they want.I think its also what you need for any Assc.discounts benifits etc.

I have heard some hotels accept it to give you a better rate.

I used mine when I was shopping around for better home and auto insurance, TDCanadaTrust gives IAFF memebers a discount on insurnace.

R_D have you ever priced North City for car and home insurance? They deal with firefighters only. I just swithched and I am saving $600/year home-auto combined.

I dealt with north city a number of years ago I was with them for about 5 years, they were great until a monthly payment was missed due to a technical error.Instead of phoning me to find out what happened they just sent me a letter stating if I did not pay my FULL years insurance they would drop my policy. No claims, clean abstract two cars and a harley insured with them.

Needless to say I took my bidnis elsewhere and got a cheaper rate to boot.I know there are lots of medics and coppers with them as well, some have had good but just as many have had bad experiences.I did always like dealing with Karen or Wanda.Dont know if they are still there.

On topic off topic,I was booking a hotel room for Mrs.Dentedhead and the little dentettes today When I went to get my CC I saw my shiny new card in my wallet.I asked about an IAFF discount, Delta hotels offered one they also offer a corparate rate for municipal employees.Unfortunatly the card holder has to be present to receive it.I cant go, so no discount but they did give me a sweet deal on the room regardless.Never hurts to ask.

They're not laminated ... it's a plastic card, much like a credit card.

Has anyone actually used their card for anything?

Not really, I don't do much travel unless its on union business, but some hotel chains offer a sizable discount to IAFF members. I think theres a list of companies that offer discounts on the website

Can anyone of you access the Member's page on the IAFF website? When I try to log in, it says that my SIN isn't registered with them? Any help would be appreciated.

Mine works fine. Perhaps your local hasn't supplied the pertinent info, But then I guess you wouldn't have gotten the card.....

Mine didnt work last year so I forwarded a IAFF change of information sheet to the union secretary with my SIN on it and now I have complete access to the members area, try emailing someone from the site or ask your union steward or union secretary about getting access with your SIN number

hehehe...every time I don't bother searching before I start a new thread this happens LOL...:p

Thanks for the bump though DH...there's lotsa good info in this thread!

On a thread related note...earlier on there is mention of TD insurance giving better rates to IAFF members. Anyone have a policy with them? Are they good to deal with? I ask because I'm getting fed up with the AMA here in Alberta (Alberta Motor Association) who do my car and tennant insurance. I'm shopping around, so if anyone has had any dealings with TD lemme know how happy you are with their service.
