Greetings fellow Paramedics!I am new to this forum. I am looking for some insight into these three agencies Toronto,Peele and Ottawa. Im from out of town and while my wife is pursuing a nursing career in Ontario I would like to continue my Paramedic career. Now I know that I may have to do a program because my Paramedic training was done in the US, but please if anyone could help me out with some answers to these questions I would greatly appreciate it.

(1) How long does the paramedic transition take? Ive visited the MOH website but couldnt get a grip on the timeline?
(2) how long is the recruitment process at these three agencies?
(3) Whats the salary at Toronto for ACP,PCP,EMR? (not on website)
(4) In the event that recruitment take longer than expected, do hospitals in these areas hire paramedics for the ER? If so hows the pay?
(5) At these three Paramedic services, how are the 12 hour shifts rotated? Is there a set way of rotating or you pretty much find out how you working by the end of evey week?
(6) What opportunities for career advancement are available at these services?

And in advance I thank you for any advice or information you can share with me.

1) dunno, you used to be able to challenge the EMCA which is now AEMCA if you had recognized experience such as an RN,military medic or out of province/country medic. This would be done at the time of the provincial writes which is typically early summer, with the introduction of symptom relief that may have changed, call Toronto EMS and speak to one of the educators in t
training.

2)Anywhere from a week to a month depending on the service.I don't know if any other services do the in house training like TO does once hired you go to TO school which was 6 weeks (IIRC) this may have changed at the time TO was the only service doing it.

3)Province wide wages range from $32-40+/hr depending on your designation.

4) No Hospitals in Ontraio don't use medics or PA's the only other acute care providers in ERs are the PRNs.

5)I can only speak to TO you work a 6 week cycle that has you working 20 of 42 days such as NNN-7off-NNNN-5off-DDDD-5off-DDDDD-4off-DDD-3off-back to 3N.

6)Like anywhere else you work hard you can advance just don't get caught up in the white shirt fever and alienate yourself from your peers.I can name several of the mgt members at TO who came on with the mindset of getting off the road as quick as they could to work bankers hours and wear white shirt.

hope that helps

Thanks for the info. I agree that there are some who may have "white shirt fever". And you can always tell them a mile a way. EMS for me though is a career and the eventuality is a white shirt. I do enjoy patient care and working the streets so if I am fortunate to work for any of these services I plan to saturate myself in patient care as I am currently doing. Cant thank you enough for the info and advice!

No probs if you look on the TOEMS website I think they either have someone you can call.I will try and contact one of my old pals and find out more. I may need to PM you for a rough outline of you qauls and then I can at least tell them what level you are trained to. talk to them
