I was taking Durhams Pre service program just before i got hired full time. Its not a bad program overall, they have made a few changes this year which i feel are poor choices for the college.

You know have to buy your own set of full fire fighting gear at at cost of 1500 dollars and doesnt include boots, gloves, balaclava and helmet which is an additional 400.

Last year they lost an extremely good instructor. Right now they have the training officer from oshawa teaching, a fire prevention officer from clarington and a full time fire fighter from whitby teaching the modules. I dont know much about the full time program. I was told from the full time guys last year that the part time program does more hands on practical work than the full time program, but that could have changed by now.

Hope this helps...

Yep, the pre service program costs about 10,000 the first year. It is crazy expensive. That sone reason I didnt go into it.

Still in fire related course, but prevention aspect and loving it. I'll still be saving lives, but you guys will still get the glory. I can handle that.

yes, and what's the percentage of graduates really getting jobs??High so I've heard! so it may seem like alot when you first get going, but you will be repayed in many ways...your cheque will be HUGE and benefits to boot, did I say huge well...ok...not so HUGE...actually it's like a bad joke...you want me to do what for what?!!!so you really have to love it or just head out to the nearest baseball field and start throwing...Ol' roger clemens 18 million to throw a ball aroung once every 6 days...maybe and were freezing our balls off on the highway in the middle of the night..Oh I don't have any balls but u know what I'm sayin'..oh, so frustrating

I started taking the part time @ Seneca in September 2004... I weighed the options of who offered what and I felt that Durham left there program a little on the empty side... Plus you have to bust your back to be in class twice a week four hours per class... for half a regular semester... plus they don't include a program on fitness like Seneca does... I know it's a cash grab but you have to get your York Cert. in the class...

LtBlondie.....these guys/gals making the big bucks aren't truly happy though. Sure they've got more money than we can comprehend.....but they've got so many problems because of their fame and fortune. I'm sure you're actually passionate and proud about Firefighting........especially when you work for an excellent reputable department like the one you work for.
Yes ?

yes yes yes but I would still like to play a sport any sport and get paid big for it!! The Combat doesn't bring in much wealth if you know what I'm sayin' Durham does have a fitness portion as well and I think I will head up the CPAT training out of durham as well as Combat Challenge Training..yehaaa

Lt Blondie, you guys are trying to figure me out, I hope this is not a bad thing. Here is a clue, I will show up to recruit school with a positive attitude and I will do my best, also I will be very very proud to wear the VFRS and join your team.

Well you did miss 2004....
The year of the 27th pay
The year without a contract
The year without station 78 being built (occupied)
The year without station 79 being started
The year they're taking the figures for the new sick time policy ( that no one knows about)
It wasn't a good year for moral.....but the job itself is great.
See ya around sometime

PS while your doing your recruit morning runs, try to keep up with Cpt Leonard and Cpt Coutice

Kriand, sorry to hear all that, being an outsider I would think fire, police, ems would all be taken care of since you put your lives on the line each day. As an outsider, you guys' get all my respect and that is why I want to join your team.

Hopefully things prevail, but you are right, I dont know much about the little things and have not been through the difficult times. I am sure I will one day, but all I know is it would be an honor to be part of the VFRS.
