Hey people.

Just wondering if any of you are, or know of any superstitions related to firefighting.....

Only one I've heard of is about clean trucks & call's......

Proved that true today.....not 20 hours after we finally were able to give our beasts a bath we get toned out to the first structure fire of the year.
(haven't had one in a really long time.....needless to say, haven't had a fire in 6 months or so)

Well...Fires tend to occur in threes. Meaning if you have one you tend to have two more within the month.

Also...if you make up your bunk too early your asking to be out all night.

And never, ever, and i'm taking a big risk here as I am working all night, say aloud that "its quiet".....ever.

That isn't superstition, it is a fact of life. The front of fire trucks do not get dirty. unless it is the ladder and it is following the pump too close.

When you are lying in your bunk around 6:oo in the morning and your back teeth are floating, get up and pee no matter how tired you are, the extra 20 minutes of uncomfortable sleep is tempting fate.

Actually in my hall there are 4 bedrooms that allow 2 beds per room, so the big trick is to try and sneek out of the room early in the morning and shut the door so your roomy who was really sawing logs doesn't wake up. Than everyone in the hall sneaks around till shift change . We were the day shift one time who had the pleasure of waking one of the nightshift guys up at 10 am. We would have left him longer but we knew he was building a house.

heh... actually, we are about 3 hours north of toronto... LOTS of bugs up there, especially in may! bugs and pine tar are not always that fun to try and get off... the pine tar drips from the trees onto the trucks while they sit on-scene (hence mainly the medical, but it's still an asspain to get off).

We don't really have any superstitions, but we do have the unofficial policies about stepping over a ladder, stepping over a patient, having an accident with a vehicle, or whatever you can trick a recruit with; is that you have to buy beer for your crew.

When I first joined I asked why that was and everybody just said "I dunno know its always been like that."

Oh, I have heard about washing the wheel wells though.

Not really superstitions but i have definately noticed it comes in 3's. Also a big one is if you ever talk about something it is bound to happen later that day or the next. "gee we havent had anything over at the old folks home in a while" BEEEEEEEEEEEP BEEP BEEP!!!!! or "traffic has been moving great along the highway" thats about when the tones go.

if you ever talk about something it is bound to happen later that day or the next.

Back in the day when things were good around the station, I was working with Dave, our deputy chief, after practice putting the SCBAs back into service. I said "Gee Dave, for a white hat when was the last time you actually wore one of these at a call?"

Later that week we got a rather nasty vehicle fire and Dave had to dress in an SCBA to supervise cutting away part of the vehicle to gain access to its burning fuel tank.

Later that month, we were joking around about it and I said, "well Dave, when was the last time you had to use the accountability board at a call?" and we all had a good laugh.... Well, later that week......

We did the same thing for ladders and protable pumps! After that we stopped saying anything about it!

----------------------

As per my own personal superstitions, I ALWAYS kept my FF gloves in my left pant pocket, work gloves in my right pant pocket, medical gloves in my inside jacket pocket, and flashlight in my right jacket pocket. Not sure if that is a superstition or just me always wanting to keep things in the same pocket so I can find them when needed!

I used to loop the suspenders on my turnout gear a certain way when they are in my locker.

Further more, I have pictures of my family and g/f on the inside of me helmet. I always made it a point to look at them and smile before putting my helmet on and getting on a truck.

Not that it is a superstition, but how many others have had "a feeling" that something wasn't right or something was going to happen, only to have it happen?

I had this happen many times, the most notable was at an MVA during a bad snow storm many years back. The PT was self extricating with minor injuries and sitting on the highway barrier about 25 feet from the accident scene. I was working on him and the entire time had a bad feeling until I decided that we were going to move the patient into the back of the rescue and finish working on him in there. A few minutes after moving him a car lost control in the snow coming around the corner and hit the barrier right were we where working a few minutes before. I got a couple of weird looks from the crew that night.......

NBmedicFF

Not really a superstition, but sometimes at work we will order pizza or something greasy and I eat till it hurts. Then I sit back, fat and happy, and then the tone goes off for some call that is guaranteed to require some great physical exertion. Don't know why it happens like that...just always seems to. Not after my tuna or something...then we just sit at the station doing nothing.

hmckay91
08-17-2005, 01:43 PM
We also find that calls generally come in groups of three (within a week for us). After the first, it is absolutely forbidden at the station to say, "That's one".

Innocent things said in practice always come back to haunt you. I recall one practice (Interior Searches with 100% black out masks on), where it was said "don't worry it will never be this dark inside" well...the apartment was REALLY dark...

Woe to you, Oh Earth and Sea, for the Devil sends the

beast with wrath, because he knows the time is short...

Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the

beast for it is a human number, its number is Six hundred and

sixty six.

(Anyone care to play name that song?)

The Number of the Beast is mentioned in the Book of Revelation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Revelation) of the Christian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian) New Testament (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Testament) and has long been accepted to be 666 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/666_%28number%29) (or, in some cases, 616). The meaning of the number is debated. In some interpretations of Christian eschatology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_eschatology) the “Beast” is believed to refer to a being controlled by or equated with the Antichrist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antichrist), whereas some scholars, such as Dr. Delbert Hillers and the editors of the Oxford & Harper Collins translations, contend that the number is a code for the Roman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman) Emperor Nero (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Nero)[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Number_Of_The_Beast#_note-0), a view that is also supported by the Roman Catholic Church (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Catholic_Church) [2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Number_Of_The_Beast#_note-1).
666 is also the value of the kilohertz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilohertz) frequency of the Bodenseesender (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodenseesender), a big AM radio station in South Germany, which is receivable at night in all of Europe. It is also the frequency of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Broadcasting_Corporation)'s Canberra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canberra) station.
In the United States, '666' is a brand name of cough syrup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cough_syrup).
666 is the port number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCP_and_UDP_port_numbers) used by the game Doom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom) (by id Software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_Software)) when playing against another player via TCP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmission_Control_Protocol).
In Unix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix) and similar operating systems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix-like), a file permission (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_system_permissions) of 666 (which is not uncommon) grants all users read and write permissions on the file.
666 is the sum of all the numbers on a typical roulette (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roulette) wheel. (A typical roulette wheel is numbered from 1 to 36, with one (in Europe) or two (in North America) zeroes. See the point on triangular numbers, above.)
666 is the numerical value of: "ועתה יגדל-נא כח אדני" ("Ata yigdal na koach Ado-nai"; Now, let the power of my Lord grow) (Numbers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Numbers) 14:17). This was Moshe's (Moses) prayer invoking Divine Mercy on behalf of the Jewish People. [2] (http://www.ohr.org.il/ask/ask277.htm#Q1)
CSX Transportation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSX_Transportation) currently has a GE AC6000CW (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel-electric_locomotive) with the number 666.
666 is a nickname for Benzene Hexachloride (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindane), a powerful insecticide and pediculicide. Its chemical formula is C6H6Cl6.
Similar to the Roman numeral occurrence, combining one of each of Japan's coin currency yields 666 (500, 100, 50, 10, 5, 1)
Apple's first computer, the Apple I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_I), was priced at $666.66.
For a time in Ontario, Canada, the Spicy Chicken Combo from Wendy's came to $6.66 CDN after taxes added.
Organic molecules are based on carbon-12, with 6 Protons, 6 Neutrons and surrounded by 6 Electrons.
There is a theory/idea regarding the biblical meaning of 666. Man was created on the sixth day and the Supreme Being is three persons (Father, Son and Holy Ghost). Therefore the number 6 represents man and the fact that it is repeated three times implies that man is trying to be God.Happy 06-06-06 :p

I definately believe in the don't make your bed too early superstition. Every time that I have made it before about 9:00PM we have had a brutally busy night. I usually try to make it around 10:00PM now...so far so good :p

I also have a special way that I put my clothes out beside my bunk for the night calls, boots, socks laying on top of them, pants spread out over top of that, then shirt on top of that. When the tones go off it's ALWAYS shirt, pants, socks, boots, and I'm off. I can do it blindfolded now, so it helps me get a better nights "rest" knowing that my uniform is set out in a specific way, and that I can have it one and be looking good in seconds.

The 3am sideways bed hair is still a problem

AB:)

vollyFFgurl

Well I'm the same as ABFF, I set my clothes out at night damn near the same way he does....my pants go over the back of the chair, shirt on top of them...my socks are put ontop of each boot and the boots are put at the bottom of my chair..most of the time i will wear my shirt to bed however so that im not temporarily blinded and running into walls or tripping on pets on my way out the door.

Also, before i jump on any truck for a call, when i don't miss them, I have a pendant on a chain around my neck that is a maltese cross. I got it from a very special person in my life and every time I get on a truck I pull it out and say a short prayer for myself and friends. Makes me feel like someone is there watching over me and them. weird superstition I know but it's my own thing.
