In 1989 Mike Nicholson started his firefighting career on a part-time basis in Whitecourt. That same year I had a 45-minute telephone interview with Bob Sampson from his Chicago home when he was just winding down his career. Born in 1925, Mr. Sampson was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, a disease which progressively weakens muscles. He survived his 20th birthday -- something very few people with MD do.
