Mother of fire victims says alarms didn't go off

SASKATOON, SK – A Saskatoon mother who lost one of her children in a house fire earlier this month is angry with the landlord who was responsible for checking her smoke alarms.

Jennifer Bowron left her hospital bed Monday to speak with reporters and thank the people of Saskatoon for all the support and concern they have shown the family. But she's also angry with landlord Jack Grover, who has been charged with falsifying smoke detector records.

Bowron said "I'm very angry at him that he didn't do his part as a landlord and make sure everything worked,"

SASKATOON, SK - A Saskatoon landlord accused of falsifying smoke detector records in connection with a fatal house fire is headed to trial. Jack Grover was charged following a Saskatoon house fire March 3 that killed two young children. He's charged with obstruction of justice and is accused of falsifying smoke detector records.

Grover's preliminary hearing was scheduled to begin Wednesday morning, but he waived his right to the hearing and the case will go straight to trial. Grover's lawyer Kojo Barnes Grover said his client is anxious for the case to go to trial as soon as possible. "We expect that his innocence would be established and confirmed," Barnes said.

SASKATOON, SK - A Saskatoon landlord accused of falsifying smoke detector records in connection with a fatal fire has been convicted of attempted obstruction of justice. Queen's Bench Justice Grant Currie will decide whether Jagdish (Jack) Lal Grover goes to jail for the Criminal Code offence. He'll be sentenced on Aug. 31, and the Crown says it will be seeking jail time.
