I have seen wages as low as $8/hr for a EMT-A here in Alberta. Does anyone else think that is just pathetic? How can a Ambulance service expect to keep employees with such sub standard pay practices.

That is really pathetic. How much money per/hr does an average
EMS make?

It all depends on the service you are working for, and if it is private or municipal. I find municipal pays more.

Durham ems, in Ontario. Has a new contract that pays 70000-76000 for 2004. By 2007 it will be low 80's for primary paramedics to aprox 90000 for advance care medics.:)

Where did you find that information on pay in Durham region?

For Durham EMS you must have written your EMCA exam and also have to be a level 2, or level 1 advanced before they will hire you. Once you are hired, starting pay for a level 1 advanced is $34 an hour, working 12 hour shifts. Thats pretty good pay, and it is also the highest pay in Ontario, and I also think Canada, but im not 100% sure.:) :D

If you go to the Ottawa Paramedics association web site they have a link to all the wage scales in Ontario.
As for Durham EMS, Primary care paramedics for 2005 will earn 31.15hr...2006 33.18...2007 35.30 with shift premuims and stat time a pcp will make aprox. $84000.00 a year for 2007.
Advance care paramedics for 2005 will earn 33.99...2006 35.89...2007 37.88 When shift premuims and stat time are factored in an acp will make aprox $90000.00 a year for 2007. The yearly wages are based on a 42 hour work week. And yes this makes DREMS the highest paid, but not for long. I hope this helps.

T.O wages are about $28/hr then add 5% for Level 2 skill set and another 5% for level 3.CCTU not sure of hourly but they make close to 80 large a year. This is before OT stat holidays etc.Yorks PI,PII are close to this I think, its been a while since I talked to any friends there.

In BC the ambulance service is provincial and you start off as a part time paramedic (you have the option of going full time providing your seniority is high enough, about 8 years I think). Entrance requirements are basically your level 3 first aid ticket (a 2 week first aid course), CPR C and a class 4 drivers licence. http://www.healthservices.gov.bc.ca/bcas/bcasqual.html
Wage starts off at $13.74 an hour for an OFA3, BUT you only get paid your wage if you get a call (with a minumum 4 hours pay). If you don't get a call for your entire shift, you get $2 per hour for the shift. the slow stations can get less than one call per day.

BC sucks! (at least they'll have time to enjoy the golfing weather) :D

Things have changed here for the better in terms of part-timers. The $2/hr "pager pay" is gone for the majority of the stations, and they have been replaced with a new shift pattern called "Foxtrot" replacing the old "Kilo". With this new shift pattern paramedics are now required to stay at the station for their scheduled shift (12hrs). Where as before they picked up their pagers and went home till it went off. Now that they are required to be at the station, the response times have dropped alot. They receive $10/hr, until they are called then they are paid their proper rate of pay per collective agreement. Which I beleive starts at $17something an hour. There are ALS Unit Chiefs making almost $30/hr here. Working 2-12 hr days followed by 2-12 hr nights, then 4 days off.

They still have a minimun requirement of OFA III, but they highly recommend the PCP Program. If you get hired with that, you can put into stations more quickly and over others that were hired before you and their is nothing they can do, as you have a higher level of training.

Tehy make a decent wage here, about 80% of a firefighters salary, which is why many of the younger ones apply to our Dept.

Thats almost the norm everywhere now.Work as a medic its a great stepping stone to the FD.I have talked to students doing their rideout they figger that close to half of their classes are innit to get on fire eventually.

You are correct...well kind of.

I currently work as an EMR in the oilfield. I make a base rate of $200 per day. When I go on "batch" (bring your own food) jobs I get an extra $40 per day. If I am on location for more than 12 hours then I get $12 p/hour drive time and it's usually more than a 2 hour drive there and back. Emt-a's start at a base rate of $230 and Paramedics start at $420 per day. Most companies pay more but be careful who you work for. A reputable company will pay for you accommodations. Some companies pay for your transport too and from the city you are based in.

You can't really break it down hourly though. The longer you stay on location the less you make. The day rate is based on up to 12 hours at location. Some jobs require you to be at camp 24 hours per day. You are considered on call after the 12 hours and get over time if you are called upon in the night.

Some times you do day trips out of the city....that get you the meal sub too.

The nice thing about it is I can go up and work whenever I want. I'm casual...and there is always work for me up there.

Sometimes you get a very cozy shack with satelite t.v. to hang out in all day and some times you have to sit in a truck for 12 hours. It's pretty boring work.

The most I have made hourly was about $50 p/hr and the least I can make is about $16 p/hr.

All the companies up there are hurting for medics right now. You need to be registered with Alberta College of Paramedics and you need your H2S(gas)Alive course.

It's a good way for me to pay for my EMT-A course and make some quick coin while breaking throught to municipal.

Cheers.

Who do you work for kman?

Industrial Paramedic Services. They are also subsidising EMR courses. You can get them cheap...as long as you sign a contract saying you will work for the entire season.

I remember when I was in camp, that's who we had in Alberta. They had pretty nice trucks. I have thought about doing that for a few months or season.

What kinds of hours are you working in total? or shifts or whatever. Sounds like a pretty good deal, but if you are only working 2-3 days a month it doesn't!

I might be able to help. As far as I know they are 12 hour days for 2-3 weeks straight, then off for 1 week. As far as length is it determined on how long it is cold enough for the work. Usually from late November through to April. There are some areas that they can work year-round. When I mean "they" I am refering to drilling rigs. I hope that helps a little.

As far as the first-aid is consurned(sp?) the EMR program is 3 weeks long, and its $1300 for the course and another $90 plus tax and shipping for the books. That is from the JI website, I am not sure how much other companies charge for it. I know the EMR is WCB and BCAS recognized here in BC.

Here is the website

www.jibc.bc.ca/paramedic/programs/para_programs/emr.htm
I know this website comes up weird looking in the thread, but I clicked on and it works

I work about 15 days per month. By choice. I can work the whole month or I can work "some times". They say that shifts are 2 or 3 on and 1 off but if you get hired as casual then you make your own availability. Shifts are up to 12 hours. There have been many times where I have worked 6 or 7 and sometimes even 5 hours. Keep in mind that some times you might spend 12 hours on location and it's a 2 hour drive each way. The driving is in company vehicles btw.
