:D
Has anyone had a chance to check out the new Firechix calendar?! It's wicked!
The girls are awesome and they are from all over Canada. This year they are supporting Riskwatch and MS, but are also using it as a fundraiser for volunteer fire departments.....good idea!!
Check it out at www.firechix.com
Cheers!

hmmm... I wonder if being in one of those calendars is good for your career? Me don't think so....

How could it hurt your career? The men do it ... so why not females?

I don't know Colin... just a gut feeling I guess. Of course there aren't supposed to be any "double standards" but in reality there are.

I just think as a female in the fire service if you want to be taken seriously this isn't the way to go about it. I'm talking if you have any ambition to be promoted to any leadership role in the future.

Don't get me wrong... I'm not complaining or implying anything negative about the women in the calendar. Not at all. They look very beautiful and they are doing it for a great cause. This isn't a put-down.

I just had to ask myself " hmmm...would I be in that calendar?" and my answer came out as a no. I wouldn't risk my hard earned career that way.

Now that you have me thinking about it...guys can make themselves look dumb too. Like one of my hometown firefighters who took a LOA to go on a strip tour or something. I'm sure you all have heard about it. What a boob...

Yeah... the guy is real "Chief" material LOL

Yeah I did hear about the fellow doing a strip show... thought it was an firehall rumour!
Anyway, I can kind of see your point in there being a double standard, but as you said its for a good cause. And besides, by the time you would ever be up for a promotion where marks aren't the only thing you're judged on, it will have all been forgotten.
When you get on, and by the sounds of your other posts it's likely ... try it out, it's lots of fun, trust me!!

I guess you're right Colin... I'd be a long time in the ranks before anything like this would matter.

Ah! You sound like you talk from experience... yeah, looks like fun. If you put the hard work into being in shape...why not?

Thanks for the vote... I'll get there... it's all worth it to be able to work around the calibre of people who make it.

best,
Paula

Regarding it affecting your career - I would guess that that depends on your hall / force. One of our TF's is female and there's nothing about her that wouldn't be taken seriously. (I.e. she's a firefighter - gender is irrelevant because she does the job just like the rest of us)

I think the cause is a good one - I'm a parent of a severley handicapped child, as well as a diabetic daughter, so it's nice to see groups and organizations come up to the line for those who can't help themselves as well.

Is there any where on the web to see it?

It's ok with me as long as you don't forget what it is meant for. Where I come from it is done for fundraising for a childrens hospital in the burns unit

Hey, I've got an idea:

Put ME in one of the firefighter calendars!

This way, people will pay you large sums of money to take the calendars away and never, ever show them again - Should have enough money for a new tanker in no time :) :) :)

(It's Friday and I'm glad the work week is over :)
