Who's bright Idea were those things? They are heavy, akward, and half the time useless...

we have 6 of them.....i'm talking about the 5 gallon one with a hand pump.......they work good for corn stalk field fires.....we have hit hot spots on ditch banks and in a 20 acre woodlot once. ya they are heavy, but we need them. We have a CAFS coming on a 4x4 1 ton, so I doubt we will be using them much more.

We've got 8 of em.. not saying they don't serve a purpose, just that they are a giant pain in the you know what...
I am just venting here... spent a couple of hours on a stubborn grassfire and my back is not a happy camper.
Best trick though is... either show up last.. all the packs are taken.. ( Awww Shucks)
or find the biggest hotspots and dump the whole thing on it...

do you mean the big metal ones? Yes, they are pretty gross to pack around. I always liked the rubber bladder ones better, they form fit more.

The ones we have are boxy plastic orange ones..

oh, I forgot about those ones. They are a bit better than the metal ones, but the rubber ones are best I feel. I used them in Alberta in the 90's. They were great if you had to walk a ways from the helicopter drop site to the fire, carry them in empty and rolled up, use them a bit and hike back out. Fairly comfortable to wear other than the straps digging into your shoulders, not too bad really. I have not seen them used in BC, I have been out of it for a while, we just have the metal ones in our trucks in case we stumble on something.

Theres lots of grass left not too far from the gta and its pretty and green and wont be built on for sometime. One of the many reasons I got out of dodge.
We have the big ass bladders as well they are also alot nicer to use than lugging a water can into the bush when the police call to have party fires put out,we get quite a few of those in the city limits through the summer.

Yes Sir. Got 4 of these gems for comfort fit and longevity of usage without refill. I just gotta say, Proby's and Piss Packs are a prefect match. They sure have come a long way from the tin can beating a guy's back up.

The best back pack pumps I've used are the bladder style. If the only ones available are those boxy plastic or metal ones... it gets passed off to contract fire figther or rookie.
In general most forest service personnel (at least on my crew) can't stand the back pack pumps.
If you do have to you use and it's a hot day, try to find one with a small leak. That way it keeps you somewhat cool.;)

Eastern Onatrio and Western Quebec has had its share of grass and brush fires, According to the news Eastern Ontario & Western Quebec Fire Departments we run off their feet over the weekend,Just to the north of us in Chichester Quebec, they had water bombers and helicopers, helping them fight a good size forest fire, we also had two calls, one in a pine forestry lot and the other at a local lumber mill, on Saturday...From what the news has said they have issued a no burn policy for Eastern Ontario... lets all pray for rain........

Most of the guys at our hall prefer the hard plastic ones over the bladder style. Maybe that's what separates the men from the boys...:)

I prefer the kind filled with hose and attached to the BIG red thing......the last time I trudged through 300 acres to a fire with one of the piss packs........only one of us came back ;)

Read your posts on the pumpcans sorry to hear that you have never used an H.T.Keg PowerPak,we designed them for the specific reasons that you have discussed in this forum, they are cumbersome heavy and best of all useless.
This PowerPakŪ has it's own power and delivers fire foam on demand, one hand use,Comes in three different stlyes.
If you get a chance check us out www.htkegs.com (http://www.htkegs.com/)

When forced into getting the "back can tan" I will take the bladder style over plastic any day. The hard shell ones are a pain in the backside to lug unless they are chock full or bone dry which is most likely the prime reason that guys are always dumping them out!! The soft ones are easily stored and super easy and comfortable to carry, IMHO.
Bambi buckets are only fun when you do not have to mess with them under a spinning 500 or 212.
