I bought a new helmet mounted flashlight last week. One of those Streamlight 4 AA jobies with the 7 LED bulbs. Has anyone else used these lights? If so how do you find them?

glad you started this post. I am about to purchase one of those as well and was debating whether to go streamlight or pellican. interested to hear what others have to say.

personally, I just took my led light off my helmet and replace it with a UKE 4AA. The LED is nice as long as you don't go into smoke. There is absolutely no penetration with it. It is like driving in heavy fog with your high beams on. As far as quality goes though if you are still leaning towards LED, I would recommend streamlight

Pellican, it was free and i like it very much...... i have seen the led's but i don,t think they have the range..... The pellican im using requires 3 c cell batteries and the battery life is pretty good..........so Pellican is my choice.....

you can get a "smoke cutter" led combo light... amazing how these things cut through the crud in the air... it gives off a blueish light:D

I had one of those streamlight 7 Led flashlights...

Works really well, the batteries last for a long time (depending on usage)
In a working fire, they help keep you hands free, and the light penetrates the smoke pretty good. As well, you can see other crews with their lights on in a medium smoke filled room.
The only downfall is, is walking up to someone with it on, and forgetting about it and shining it in their face ... haha .. heard some swear words when that happens.. :)

I also like the UKE 4AA light, they even sell their own holders. The BIG ED is a good light too, though not helmet mounted.

Thats funny coz while guys are saying you dont get as much distance out of the beam you get pretty good penetration. Summer is fast approching which means I'll be spending the next several months driving either the pumper or aerial constantly, so its unlikely I'll get much chance to test it out till fall, unless I'm in on overtime

I wear a pelican Little ed led on my coat and it works awesome....for night calls or in structures...i also carry a sabre light in my pocket which is good but doesn't come close to the LED light. as for the debate between streamlight or pelican a guy on my crew had a streamlight led on his helmet and melted part of it because the on/off switch is a rubber push button and his light was toast and the place he bought it from said no way to replacing it.....i know the guy i bought my pelican said if i dont like it run over it and bring it back, they are great to deal with.

Does anyone know of a good online store to purchse lights(or any personal ff equipment). Its something that we all need and a good light is hard to find when you need it the most.

Yo Sticky welcome to the site,

Have a look at the Firehall.com Directory (http://www.firehall.com/directory.php), there is a link on the left side of every page.

Thanks guys. I am a firefighter in Greenwood but volunteer in Middleton. Those survivor lights are what I am looking for. They seam to hook on the your gear so that you can see without loosing the use of your hands.

well i stand to be corrected, the PELLICAN i was using was a great light till i purchased the STREAMLIGHT 4AA man what a flashlight it really is bright and the range of the light beam is amazing, have played with it in the smoke and it really performed well, way above my PELLICAN AND SUPER SABRELITE...... i rated the other flashlights an 7 out of 10 but this bad boy deserves a 10, its the best flashlight by far...... and the price range wasn't that bad... $45.00 range

Has anyone tried the new Streamlight Survivor LED in smoke? Does it work as well as the smokecutter bulb? The new switch on the Survivor is cool. What do you think?

My helmet light had 2 settings LED and Halogen.... it's great! I'm looking into getting something with a red light so I can use it and not lose my night vision

Just a note on improvement in LED flashlight technology. Some Pelican lights now feature "Recoil" technology, which is essentially having the LED face backwards at a full reflector allowing for 100% of the light to be reflected forward, kind of like a lighthouse. Gives a bright collimated beam and gives off far less ambient light which means it cuts through smoke far better than your standard LED light.

thanks for the techy-speak, code! sounds like a great new system for the LED lights :)
