TIMMINS, ON - The Connaught Fire Department was breaking the ice recently as a part of their on-ice training. With gear designed for oil rig abandonment in the North Atlantic, making the suits good in the water without affects of exposure for 24 hours, the 12-man volunteer fire department made the plunge into Barbers Bay.
Reigning over an area scattered with lakes makes this type of on-ice training an important part of their regime. “The first training we had we brought Code 4 Search and Rescue from Ohio and they taught us firstly ice rescue like what we’re doing, and then they taught us advanced ice rescue so that we could train each other after,” said Chief Bruce Larose. “Over the years we’ve probably had six actual rescues that we’ve had to do.”
