There is currently a multiple alarm fire burning in Edmonton at a bumper repair shop (3 Buildings) as far as I know the fire started as a grass fire and spread to the buildings. The original call came in at 17:33 local time (mountian) and at the time of this post it is 21:50.

Units I saw on scene:

4 Pumps
3 Aerials (only two with ladder up)
2 Rescues
1 Tanker
Dangerous Goods
Investigation
2 District Cheifs
1 Platoon Cheif

The question i have about this one is that this started from a grass fire beside a business on a major road. There is a fire station 30 seconds from the building so how do 3 buildings end up getting destroyed.
Youd think that someone would have noticed a grass fire in that area early enough to get crews on scene early.

Then again it was pretty windy today and it was an old building.

The building is beside major train tracks for CN so the major road goes under the tracks so that would have obstructed the view from the grass that was on fire. The building was a Plating shop and had a courtyard full of junk as well as numerous chemicals inside. I heard there was a small explosion so that may be why the fire got out of control so fast.

Do you kind of skulk around the crowd of people hoping not to be noticed....maybe take a few pictures...post them all over your living room wall??

I just stand there and watch like the other 100 people there were doing, I don't take any pictures. And just because I try out there doesn't mean I will be hired here.

In all fairness to firefighterkid If i wasnt on call Saturday night i definetly would have checked this fire out. i live half an hour away from edmonton and the smoke really looked close. It seems that with most major fires there is going to be a big crowd watching as it is human nature to want to get close to these events.

FFkid I dont know your age.But if you keep that enthusiasm and make sure you do whats required for their recruitments Im sure that you will make it on.Lots of guys here are on depts in their hometowns now through sheer perserverence and a real desire to only get on "their"dept.Just remember rejection isnt fatal and if at first you dont succeed try, try again!

The teasing just goes with the territory.

We have had two "general callouts" that I can remember. i.e. where they transmit a general call in on TV and radio. I recall seeing video of the Harvey Road fire, men were walking in in their street clothes being told to don their bunker gear and walk to the fire, lol(only around the corner) and report to the I.C.

If it takes me that long my priorities will probably change, I'm just saying right now I am focused on becoming a firefighter, and I don't want a girl interfearing with that. I mean the whole going to fire etc and everything, I just wanna be devoted 110% to becoming a firefighter.

Its all in the luck of the draw, Firefighting is a career you have to set your mind to attaining, sometimes you are lucky and can get in very quickly, often it takes money and time, sometimes a long time. I know people who have worked for 10 years before being successful
