I am a young man who is set on becomming a fire fighter, and I've looked everywhere I could think of looking for what type of physical fitness i should be in. I know you have to be in good shape, thats what everyone says. I can't seem to find any specifics, andy examples that I can do myself to compare my own fitness with that required for the job. So I was hoping someone could help me with some examples that I can preform myself, like sit-ups I should be able to do, Push-ups, Or i shoudl be able to run this long in this amount of time. Or I should be able to do this in weight training... I haven't been able to find anyting like this everywhere I've looked. Can someone help me out?
Thanx a ton

Look up www.calgaryfire.com You will find the exact physical requirements that city is looking for. Also info is there about the cpat, candidate physical testing. many cities are using the firefighter combat challenge as a forum for fitness levels. Edmonton is 1 example. good luck, train hard.

The correct URL is www.calgaryfire.ca
Click on "Recruitment" and then on the side there is a bunch of documents you can download pertaining to physical abilities.
The firefighter combat challenge is a timed event that consists of a stair climb, hose lift (~50lbs), sledge hammer exercise, a brief jog/walk, hose pull, using hose to knock down a target, lifting up a rescue randy (manequin) that weighs ~200lbs and dragging it to a finish line.
Sounds way easier than it is. The fittest firefighters take around 2 minutes but even an exceptionally fit firefighter can get times around 3 mins.

just a little correction on the time thing for the challenge. The top guys in our country are running it in 1:19-1:30

Here is a link that should explain it for you! They call it the toughest 2 minutes in sports, and rightfully so. The World Championships were here in Ottawa in November and it was an absolutely amazing competition to watch... there's something about seeing that kind of sheer will and determination!

PS - I just noticed that this is not the same layout as the World Championships, but expains the event.

you need to be lean and mean! Actually thats true, you need to find a fine line between weight lifting and gaining strength and cardio, i would say cardio is a little more important then just gaining strength, do lots of running about 30mins it about 75% intensity, and do about 40mins of weights every other day, dont forget about flexibility too, stretch about 10mins on the days you dont run, with that oyu should be on your way to a fit healthy body for the career
