Montreal's fire department says it did all it could to save two men who died in a rooftop fire Sunday in St. Henri. Fire department officials say a number of conditions combined to make the rescue impossible. They blame a littered construction site around the flaming building on Notre Dame St. W., a lack of access to the rear, tinder-box plywood walls, highly flammable tar and two explosions within seconds of their arrival. The men, one of whom might have been the building's owner, were burned alive as horrified witnesses and firefighters stood by, unable to reach them.
