Well last night our final remaining old school member handed in his resignation. We will miss his experience though, but I think we will grow as a hall, now that we will get less grief when trying new things.

I am really ammased at the resentment implied at "old School" firefighters" NOT than a lot of them don't deserve it.
I am an "old school" firefighter was is on the team to use my experience to benefit the department. However there is not problem in trying new ways and seeing if they work. If the guy was a volunteer firefighter why can he not see even the young basically inexpiernced firefighters have a lot to give. I repeatedly tell our people that just because I say we should do it this way, tell me if you think it might work a better way and then we try it and if it is better adopt it, with one exception.
Do NOT do so at a fire scene. It is no time to try something utterly new.
The other thing that the Chief (much younger and not that experience in firefighting but sharp)and I repeatly tell them. There is no such thing as a "stupid question" There are just those stupid people that cannot answer the question properly.
Any Chief, Captain etc even down to the basic firefighter has to think.

When I say "Old School" I mean not open to any change at all (such as the use of recip saws during certain extrications, command boards etc). We have members with more experience then the outgoing "Old School" member but they are open to the changes of today's quickly evolving fire service.
