Our department has just started a fire fighter cadet program. While I was putting that program together I had a brian fart, and thought about a high school accredited course.

My thought is they would do some self directed studies, essays and projects in class, and spend one class per week at the fire hall doing hands on experience. They would be graded on their proformances and would recieve credit towards their graduation.

I don't know about you, but if I had something like this at my school, I would have been all over it.

Is anyone running a program like as this out there, or do you have any suggsetions on how to get this going?

I've had conversations with the local highschool, and they seem to be on board. Just looking for a little input from out there. You know, what works, what doesn't.

No sense re-inventing the wheel.

Thanks for the help.

Hey SSfire...
That is an awsome idea, Just a couple of years ago I did a co-op program Had this idea deen presented I like you would have jumped on it. However at the time A Firefighter Co-op program was hard to accomplish as the Department only allows one student per town... sounds odd doesn't it but that is what I was told

I actually had the similar thought recently, as we just had two grade 12 students that turned 18 and joined the dept. they both want to go to fire college in Brandon in a couple of years, and wanted to get some experience. That is when I thought it would make a great co-op ed program! haven't folloed it up yet though.

We do take co-op students,1 morning 1 afternoon. They participate in all of our training and station duties. They run calls and are basically observers only, unless its not safe they will shadow the hosemen.Medicals MVC s etc, at a fire they basically stay at IC.

They also have written reports and assignments to do from their school. The school liason comes in once a month for a sitdown with the student and D.C.The program is worth a credit(s).

So far its been a pleasure. No bad kids, well one but he was at least humourous.

Does the school set-up the assignments or did your dept decide what would be appropriate? I am interested in getting a little more info off you.

All assignments are set by the school. The students are chosen by interview process. I am not sure if they have to write essays or anything like that. If you want to PM with your questions I will look further into it and get you more definitive answers.
